This may seem a little crazy, but I'm revamping 1900 pts worth of Marines (see my simple green thread for the reason) and I want to know how I can make ruined wraithbone (yes, the Eldar substance) for the bases.
Basically my Marines are a company that was sent to aide an Eldar craftworld and I want to make it seem that they are on said craftworld, hence the ruined wraithbone.
Anyone with any ideas - no matter how crazy - please help me in my quest..

Mostly that'll be a careful paint job I reckon.
Eldar are all curves and runes. I'd be tempted just to make some domed or curved bases from green stuff and sculpt a few Eldish runes into the ground.
Doing a whole army like that is a bit trickier...then I'd be tempted to bust out the RTV and resin and cast myself a bunch of bases after I sculpted maybe 3 different ones.
My 2c.

Always a good idea..
I was thinking, if I was to cut Eldarish shapes (curves, etc) out of plasticard and stick them to the base, maybe get a few small beads which could pass off as gems, then paint them accordingly, would that work?
Anything easier anyone can think of, post away
++EDIT++
I was also thinking, how can I make "executive" bases that stand out for my commander, librarian, etc? I was thinking pools of water with wraithbone sticking out, but so far all the bases I've tried to do like this have ended up *%^$ed up..

A Craftworld is a giant eldar spaceship, the eldar being nomadic since their true homeworlds are destroyed
It would be unlikely for potentially dangerous allies to board the craftworld propper unless it was crippled or under attack... The eldar are a dying race fighting for survival and we all know after the inital threat is beaten off the Marines next mission would be the burning of the xeno heretic... Whilst its a lovely idea for themed basing , I would replace 'help the Eldar' with 'burn the xeno heretic!'
If you could find a way to do it it might inspire me to do my beil-tan eldar in similar bases... my partner Kirstys family live down your way... I am bound to visit them sooner or later =]
Fluff n stuff aside (hehehe fluff n stuff) I would look at H.R. Gigers alien landscapes... they are dark perverted and full of disguised bodyparts... he has extensive use of ribbed paterns but they are always portrayed as dark and gothic... craftworld + Eldar + Wraithbone = cream/white or light pastel colours in my mind...I would DEFINATELY go with Stus Idea and scuplt a few masters then cast for the army...
IC bases are tricky if you want them to stand out... the base might overwhelm the figure and draw the focus away from the model... I would maybe stay with the same theme as the sculpted masters but just make them one offs, if your making a display base I would consider doing a big logo and have your command standing grouped on it...

This may be totally no help, as I've no idea what you're talking about;
Around the late 80's - early 90's gigeresque dioramas were all the rage for golden demon-type entries, and I remember seeing a lot using natural bones like skulls and spinal columns blended in with ground work.
Maybe you could try and get hold of some mouse or bird bones and use those?
or eggshells maybe?

Well basically the only reason my marines are helping the Eldar is because they are fighting Alpha Legion and traitor guard, which ransacked a few of the Marines planets and are ravaging a break off fleet of a craftworld. After the guard and AL have been defeated my marines will turn their back on the xenos.
@ pityak: eggshells!! Genius!!
@ c0d3monk33: Im getting some casting tutorials soon off a mate, so I'll make 4 or 5 bases and just cast heaps of those.

ok, if eggshells are the sort of things that would work, there a plenty of non-organic alternatives, like the insides of kinder surprise eggs, contact lens cases (which i've got a billion of if you want some) anything like that maybe.

Brilliant thinking! the only problem with egshells is that they're so brittle - but using a plastic alternative is smart thinking - I know where I can get hold of a few of those kinder surprise thingees to smash up.
Now on to my next problem: gems. Does anyone know where I can get small (ok so thats not helpful, everything in miniatures is small...) gems to adorn the "wraithbone" ruins?

Hmmm eggshells (particularly free range) have a nice subtle texture to them that definitely resembles Wraithbone imho.
I'm sure you could catch that texture with an RTV mold...pity I don't play Eldar!

I used to own my own egg farm, well, two chooks at least.
Don't think any of my products will help you out, you're welcome to some contact lens case if they're any good (daily disposables, they're like a little shallow dish)

My parents-in-law are sheep farmers in Cambridge so they've got hens too.
Mmmm nothing like free range eggs! I still can't believe how yellow the yolks are compared to paltry battery hens.
