I've never used inks before but i've seen the results in the warhammer books. how do u use an ink on a model? they just say things like apply the ink but won't it run cos inks are watery?

You've actually hit the nail on the head.
It will run, inks are watery.
This is one of the advantages, it will run into the recesses of your figure, leaving colour there but not on the high points. In theory at least...
Also because they are watery, you can build up vibrant shades by repeated layering. And i do mean repeated, lots and lots of them!

Also good for metallics surprisingly; you can dry brush good quality artists metallic ink, and the pigment is usually much better than you find in acrylic paints.

so to apply an ink in a recess (like a cloak fold) do you stand the model up and put a dab of ink at the top of the crease.

do inks leave a glossy look? I just use my acrylic paint watered down with my windsor & newton flow improver secret recipe mix (it's only secret cos I can't for the life of me rememeber what ratios I used to mix it up)
Interesting thought about the artists inks for metallics, you mean the kind for caligraphy from windsor and newton? another medium I was interested in playing with is metallic powders, you get them for use with polymer clays and they come in quite a range of colours. they are very very fine, I've also seen metallic powders used for dusting a mold before pouring resin for a fairly authenthic metal look. Was wondering about what kind of medium to mix them with though, I have a vial of gold powder here, but i'd need a pigmentless acrylic base really or something like that

Some inks leave a very glossy surface; chestnut from any manafacturer, and citadels flesh wash, which makes it practically worthless in my book. Shiny flesh? Others aren't too bad, and there are media there whcih will flatten them out to some extent.
Does anyone know of a good Flattening finish? i use matt humbrol enamel, but find it's not too great.

If you can find it, Testors Dullcote is the flatenning finish of the gods. Inks (even flesh wash and the like) lose their gloss once watered down appropriately and can be used for to produce some fantastic results. This can be seen in Inge Jensen's work ( jenova.dk).

nearly everyone I have ever seen post swears by testors dullcote, it's the holy grail of finishing varnish for serious mini painters
that said I use windsor & newton acrylic matt varnish because I find it easier to clean up, but it's not as durable for sure, my minis have still rubbed off on pointss with handling and it cann buff to a satin finish with handling too.
Testors comes in spray and bottle version, the apray one is what everyone goes gaga over, but I only have a bottle of it, which of course means brush cean up (hence my preference for the w&n) I still found that it can buff up to a satiny finish with handling .. but I think maybe I am just being picky. I'd liek to try the spray version of testors dullcote for comparrison to the liquid. I also heard suggestion that the one i have can be used in an airbrush

right yes, from the cleaner section in the supermarket. At least that is where I got mine, right where all the floor cleaning products are
Johnson wax Klear self shining floor polish [/color] shines & protects!
It's a kind of weak polyurethane finishing isn't it? I use mine on the floor but I heard people use it on minis. I just think why use floor polish when I have got varnish for minis

Get this;
i had my Palm with the list of possible names for this product, it's called something different everywhere in the world.
Couldn't find what i wanted, walked out the store putting the palm back in my pocket.
Now remember i make models for a living, so i'm not in a suit, i'm ain a scruffy swanni covered in paint, rubber and resin with my usual two week old beard.
presumably first day on the job, comes running up to me "excuse me sir, I'm the store manager" "yes?" "I just saw you put something in your pocket" "yes that's correct" "Can I see it?" "What? No?" "Why not?" "erm, because it's mine" "it's what? "it's M-I-N-E !" "but i just saw you put it in your pocket!" "yes, and had you been waytching more closely, you would have noticed me take said item from my pocket, consult it, then return it to the same pocket" "but i didn't see that" "exactly. goodbye" "but... but...I need to see in your bag" "What??? look, I'll wait here, you go and get the police, I'll turn out my pockets and bag, then you had better have a damn good apology ready." "There's no need to be like that! if you just show me you can go" "You think I can't go? Goodbye" "but... but... but..."
Left her standing there in a tizzy, flapping her butt off.
I felt like writing to the store and complimenting on her managerial and customer skills; Had I been a shoplifter she had failed completely, had i not she had now made sure Iwill never use that shop again.
So i hope it wasn't countdown where you found it!!
