I use that crystal kote stuff on all my minis and terrain...never had a problem with it. It can get a little glossy if you really spray it on thick (something I've got to learn to avoid doing) rather than a couple of thin coats. There was a different artist's product I was using for a while...brown can of artist's matt varnish that came from Whitcoulls. That stuff was actually better...but about twice the price...and I'm cheap. I also cut all my inks with Johnsons 'Clear' Floor Wax. You want to be careful with this stuff though...as it has a high ammonia content (it stinks) which can attack some inks. In particular I've noticed it can do odd things to Windsor and Newton inks. Too much and it'll turn Chestnut Brown into a kind of sludgy green colour. I typically mix 50/50 water and 'Clear' and then add that mix to ink at around 50/50 again... The other think to be aware of it 'Clear' floor wax will give your inks quite a high 'sheen' because it's well, floor wax ...but by god it makes for a tough coat of ink that withstands quite a bit of handling even before varnishing. At least that's my experience!

Hmmm, yes...may I need to dilute my mixture a bit more as well then. That would cut back on the ink problems and possibly the glossiness too.
Dang, but I'll miss huffing ammonia as I ink wash figures.

I'm lazy as . under coat my space marines white a couple of coates ( O K one under the arm & 2 on top ) and then use a one $ brush , to give them a blue ink coat or two and then dry brush on high lights . ink accentuates scratch's shading , dry brushing stands out army /unit colours ;D 5 to 6 cotes max and looks fairly good
