I found mine at stationary warehouse. Big spray can of the stuff.
The glossy varnish fior rivers I gto in a tin at mitre10.
I get bulk paints at stationary warehouse..they have a good cheap selection. And big bottles of PVA glue too.

is that the crystal kote stuff?
I have a can of fixative that I use when I'm doing pencil work. it says on the canthat it gives a clear and permanent protection in between stages, dries in seconds to a matt finish. I've not even thought about using it on minis, I just use it to stop my pencils all smudging and getting into a mess when I am drawing. You wouldn't even know the stuff is on there, it is that matt

Thats brilliant! I wish I had calm/think on your feet skills to do something like that. Id just go huh and pull my hand out of my pocket to see what they hell she was talking about. I mean seriously she couldn't have done a worse job of that, like you say shoplifter got away & genuinie customer goes off and tells 30 odd people that the manager at countdown is a silly bitch... thats really gotta help their reputation.

Maybe I'm an instigator, maybe I'm just an old punk, but I never take shit from anyone in "authority" especially when it's only a supermarket manager.
These people tickle me, think they can tell you what to do. If I'm ever in a situation like that, where I know or even think I'm right, I'll just go "OK. I'll wait here while you get the police." Then watch them squirm. You can see the thought process going on normally "hmm, maybe I'm wrong, maybe I'm going to get myself into some sort of legal trouble for wrongful accusation". Great fun. I like baiting 'em!
the other one that gets me is all those shops that think they can go through your bag anyway as you leave. 90% of the time, if the security guy is polite, I don't have a problem with it. But if s/he wants to get shirty, sit back, wait for the police, and chuckle to yourself.
(and by the way, I'm not suggesting anyone actually follows my example...)

YEah I think it IS the crystal kote one...but I'll double check at home.
Its the one you spray over you paintings etc.
Its lasted ages. All my scenery and minis. Be sure to use it outside because it stinks something awful.
Another thing Ive heard is to use hair spray. It sets as a coating over the scenery. (apparently....havent tried it)

But does it actually flatten? Like if you have glossed you figure, then spray it, will it come out matt?
or, if you have a nice shiny decal on your model, will it kill the lustre there?

I've just seen an ad for WonderWash ink. Does anyone know about this stuff? They were selling 7 different colours for US$19 plus P&P.

Inks are great, I don't use them but thats mainly because i've not experimented with them. The colours are a lot more powerful than paints, and you can control how glossy they are by adding more/less water to them. They are exceptionally runny, and I would advise using them after the base colour, to provide the dark pieces before layering over again with the lighter shades.
You can also control whether they leave a blotchy appearance or not by adding really weird things like wax, and pva glue. I'm a little hesitant when it comes to adding these sorts of things to a model's paint job, but apparently they work pretty cool (don't take my word for it though, do a bit of research on it first ><)

Great, that's exactly what I want;
There are ways of using inks, glazes, washes and what have you but without getting "shiny bits", but it is far easier in my opinion to just paint and glaze away, then flatten the whole lot at the end

yes please!
I tell you what would be good; if you could paint a patch of gloss on a surface (anything at all) then spray with the matte, and let me know what happens.

I just water down paint with a bit of washing liquid to break the surface tension. Nothing flash or special but it works pretty well for me. I dont like the recesses to be shiney, sort of opposite to what I am trying to achieve. Though I am using black ink to give a laquer effect to some armour I'm working on.

i use windscreen cleaner fluid, same idea but i'm wary of using washing up liquid;
this may be an urban myth type thing, but when I was a biker back home, none of us would use washing up liquid to clean our bikes as it was rumoured it contained salt. My biggest hardest biker mate used to use baby shampoo
