Start : 20/03/06 End : 0000 on the 10/04/06
Requirements: Picture of a terrain piece using a CD as a base.
Guidelines: The model can be anything provided it stands on the table with a footprint no larger than the CD its based on. E.g you could build a dead tree with branches that overhung the base but not a square tower that had its corners sticking out past the CD.
The model should be scratch built (ie no buying a crater from PitYak Studios sticking it to a CD and claiming that) but could use prefabricated parts (bits box).
WIP: 1 WIP shot prior to undercoating so we can see what bits and pieces have been used. Ideally getting this posted as soon as its ready.
General: If people don’t have any ideas Im sure we can all help you come up with something you’d like to try and would be within your skills (if nothing else try a crater).
If people don’t have a spare CD let us know Im sure at least one of us could get a cd to you for p&p.
Prize: Decide the next contests Guide lines & the chance to turn your worthless CD collection into beautiful tabletop terrain.

Heh heh. Am I allowed to use a crater? 'Cos that's what I'm planning on using

You could do a junk pile using all your bits; scale isn't too important, you just need lots of techy looking bits. Maybe a pile of scrap made into a barricade around half the edge of the cd?

Huzzah! A terrain challenge! Nice idea Aaron . Burbsee, a bits box barricade would be a useful piece of CD based terrain. Personally I'm planning to do something similar, maybe a gothic ruined corner...my first official piece of City Fight terrain!

I know exactly what I'm doing, but to be fair I'm just rebuilding something I've done and sold before. Might make a start on it tonight.

Trying to find where our little son has hidden all the scratched CD's myself ...I know he's got at least a couple of old PS2 'demo discs' in his collection somewhere...

Heh heh. Am I allowed to use a crater? 'Cos that's what I'm planning on using Provided you dont go and buy them from some rival firm I think you'd probably get away with it! ;D Personally Im a bit concerned about this too, I've never done something along these lines. I've got 2 ideas one is grand and glorious and the other nice and simple so Im guessing I'll try the grand idea until I cock it up and then go for the simple option!

Simple is better! That was the thought behind a CD base...cause surely you can't get too grand in a 6inch diameter circle? Or can you???! I'll be interested to see what you create Aaron ...

Yeh I you're right its not much space to work with & I dont think it'll be enough for the 1st idea but until I sit down with a cd I cant be sure.

OK well my entry for this is a chaos themed statue surrounded by a wall of spikes. It doesn’t quite gel for me as an idea as chaos isn’t really into statues of their hero’s (demons tho so maybe I’ll use one of those) so it may turn out to be a defaced imperial figure or an icon of worship. Rather than a traditional statue. I’ve already trimmed down the pedestal (stolen from my mother-in-laws wedding cake) and the top perfectly fits a 25mm round base and the bottom perfectly fits into the clear area around the spindle hole on the CD which solves the problem of how to cover that up. I’ve marked out the “garden” area with help from a chaos marine who marched round the column a few times to make sure they can fit in comfortably. The worst part of the build is going to be chopping up the pieces of sprue and sharpening them to spikes. (Ive done about 1/4 of those required so far) Once I’ve done that I’ve going to attach some tooth picks to a few of the large spikes and attach some heads as sacrifices. (in that light if anyone could send me some spare heads (Eldar, Necron, Tau, Tyranid, Imperial Guard). It would be greatly appreciated (& I’d pay P&P)). I’ve got the thing pretty well mapped out in my head and it shouldn’t take long to get it ready to prime and painting will be a breeze with dry brushing madness on the spikes its just the column and statue Im not sure about. Oh and I have sacrificed a perfect working copy of Everquest for this contest as I know a couple of people who have disappeared from war gaming due to that insipid game & this is my revenge!!

Oooo nifty! Hmmm I can probably do you some Cadian/Catachan/Old Biker heads if I scrabble around. I could also give you a Tyranid head or two maybe...but that might not be in theme? I guess I should publically announce my piece as well then ! It is a: Ruined Building Corner for 40k City Fight. It'll be mostly made from bad casts of various Hirst Arts pieces I have laying around so I can't really claim it's scratch built I guess . However I'm creating it as an experiment because I want to try: 1) 'Rubbling' cast pieces to make them look ruined...both in the building and around the base. 2) I want to pock mark/bullethole the plaster a bit...something I haven't done before since I've been making Mordheim terrain. 3) I'd really like to try a new paint scheme too because I want to paint the Cathedral I'm working on differently and I've seen some nice Hirst Arts paint jobs on the web. I've already covered a CD base with DAS, flagstones and the first layer of walls last night. Might do some more work on the basic structure tonight. Should definitely be ready for painting by the end of this week.

What? that sounds scratch built to me! Its the putting together of the bricks that is the scratch building not having to master them up in the first place! Well in my head anyway.
