I must say I was delighted with Battlefronts attitude towards the new rulebook! A free copy! even a photocopy without the pretty pictures is a great offer!
What a refreshing approach, especially when compared to other large wargaming companies who seem to consider a new rulebook grounds for gouging another $100 out of dedicated/destitute gamers!
BOOOO to the new edition of WHFB! The existing WHFB is damn near perfect (in my not so humble opinion!)

Ah well I might not have explained clearly. (altho I think Kim did just before).
Battlefront is shortly going to release a 2nd edition rulebook. They have said that owners of the current rulebook will be able to take it into their local BF supplier and get it stamped, at which point they'll be given a cut down photocopy of the new rulebook.
Thats all the info that has come out so far.

Well I finally succumbed and bought FOW, and for king and country.
Got all my armies planned out, just need to find the time and money to satisfy my latest fad.

So I just had my first game... Its fricken cool. It half the game that GW makes... which is to say it tastes a lot like warhammerbut is half as complex and time consuming. in other words, less is more. However reading the rules is hard... maybe wording it easier would make it sound to much like warhammer?!? at the end of the day less is more. it also could be thanks to Aaron pushing my pram through the battle field =] cheers man.
I had average on the bad side luck whilst Aaron got waves of great luck... that aside every time I moved anything if got killed, excelent lines of fire man =] The russians feel like orks, but the down side is I am playing Tank company and I dont feel like I have enough troops.
Painting went well... I have assembled everything over 3 or 4 days then forgot to paint the command teams but other than that I got 100 or so komrades ALMOST painted over 2 days... Just rifles boots and outlining left =D I got tomorrow off so I am going to hit them some more and seem if I can complete over 100 FOW figures in 3 days...Also I will be submiting some FOW figures for the MMWMM... our contest has a palindromic acronym (sort of)
Tell the truth though I might stop looking at Za Stalin and pick up stalingrad... Another 200 russians or so later =]
By the way. after spending $300 on models and $70 or $80 on books I am glad I like the game =]

One thing you learn pretty damned quickly in Flames of War is to hold your fire!
Infantry that don't move or shoot in their turn get a BIG +2 save for being 'gone to ground'. Infantry that move but do not shoot get a +1 save for being 'concealed' (basically they grovel in the dirt). This makes a BIG difference in your opponent's firing step.
I'll wager with Ruski conscripts you want to hold their fire until the enemy is basically on top of you, then open up with everything you've got followed by an assault!
Ranged fire with Infantry is bad news because it gives your position away...and I play Veterans...I shudder to think what it's like for the Conscripts!
FOW is also considerably MORE balanced than any damned GW game in my experience...which makes it a much more enjoyable game regardless of opponent.

and they've got sooo many models! I had thought of doing my own figures and vehicles, but battlefront seem to have everything coverred.
Is there a better place to see the whole range than the battlefront online store? I'm a bit confused about the british infantry. I can see all the desert and mediterranean sets but no others, like early or late northern europe in standard battledress. My local model shop has some sets marked "british expeditionary force" for example, and I can't seem to find them on the site. I would like to do a late war northern eorope british army.
I'm having bother tracking down all the different rules too. I like the sas teams, and have downloaded the "sting of the scorpion" rules, but they don't have rules for the jeeps and figures themselves. Where do I get them? Also in King and Country it refers to things that aren't in the main rule book, so I'm guessing I need more of the supplements?
Ach I'm not used to paying for rules!

Battlefront releases all the little bits of rules available for download from their web site here Things like recon, snipers etc As for figures Battlefront has only released information for "mid-war" which is mostly eastern front, North africa, sicily & italy. They are about to move onto late war (D-day forward). They have had early and late war figures but they've temporarily taken them out of production awaitng release of an early war book and development of late war. Burbsee, The new rulebook is due for release on D-Day (starting their move into the late war period) so the upgrades should be available sometime around then too. If you dont have a local game supplier Im sure you could arrange to post your book up and one of us could get it stamped and a new copy for you. I'll let you know when they become available

Oh and I forgot to add you can see more info on the figures here but it doesn't actually cover more figures just most of the figures in more detail.

I've been through and downloaded most of those already, but I'm still missing something (or many somethings)
Sticking with the sas jeeps as an example; sting of the scorpion refers to the recce rules from blah blah blah, which I've downloaded, but they still talk about things I have no understanding of, like what are recce companies, and what are the stats for the jeeps themselves, things like that.
Also stuff like the king and country book says you can have smg teams in place of commando rifle teams, but there are no rules for smg teams. There seem to be little areas like that all over the place; referals to something or some rule but no inkling as to where to find it.

... and that clears up a bit about the figures. The ones I've seen are presumably old stock. I might just have to get them before they sell out. I don't think there's too much difference between bef troops and post d-day troops

For your particular Commando example I'd just look at the summary chart in K&C. Most likely the only difference between SMG and Commando Rifle teams is their ROF. So there's probably just two entries in the summary table for them.
I've got K&C at home so I could have a look at the Commandos tonight.
Recce rules should be covered by the download. A Recce platoon is simply a platoon that's marked as Recce and can thus play the rules.
Recce companies...can you have those? They're probably just a company that contains all Recce platoons...I think there's some Pioneer/Engineer platoons that can do that...although lord knows why you'd play them!

so far as K&C goes, the only recce platoons I can find are "recce platoons" from the "wheeled reconaissance tank company". The smg teams don't appear in the rules that I can see (although I did find a couple of pages I'd not seen last night, so there could be more I've missed). The only reference I can find to smg teams are in the soviet army lists in the main book.
Sting of the Scorp says the raiding force must be a recce company??? dunno, beats me.
I'm assuming somewhere there are rules / army lists for LRDG/SAS teams, with rules for the chevy trucks and jeeps.
One thing I'm happy with, and was what I was hoping, the rules as they stand will be easy to convert to other periods, modern in particular. I want some rules for playing the eternal gulf conflict and these should do the job.
