I think miniature collectors are reasonably safe as long as you get a little use out of your miniatures. Most of us collect the figures dab a bit of paint on them and then one day think OK maybe I'll try and flick this on. You're pretty safe there as it has been a personal possession. It gets a little sticky when you buy stuff specifically to on-sell it (2nd hand or otherwise). An example might be say you see my painted figure on TM and think sweet I'll have that. You buy it not to use or paint over but to slap back on TM and get a better price. This is a legit. 2nd hand trading but also requires the license. On the other hand you do have to move a bit of stuff to qualify and it would also be hell of a hard to police in bits'n'pieces. It may also get a little sticky if you have sealed blisters etc and try and on-sell them but again it's all about the quatity. It's bound to be more complicated than this but on my brief whip through the specifications I'd say most of us are sweet. I do stand to be corrected tho' so feel free.

sealed blisters wouldn't be second hand goods, they'd be seen as new items that were purchased with the intnt of onselling.. which opens up a whole new pot of noodles with the tax man and stuff heh
Anyways there was mention that many things would be exempt, clothing is one. Perhaps items under a certain value would be too? I think the law is really aimed at catching out people who deal in goods like game consoles, home electronics, mobile phones and bikes of dubious origins. Take away one of the market places for thieves and thirdparty dealers of stolen goods.. good job I say. Too many people out there are only too happy to buy and not ask questions.
I really cannot see this being something that would affect minis

True On your attempts to sell on TM. Calling on my 'vast' experience with TM perhaps it's that 'expectation' of a bargain that prevents the prices going up. Getting a good deal is a kiwi institution and as a general rule we find it hard to price creativity just in case we all end up in the 'Emperors new clothes'(I think I'm dribbling). On my few dealings on the international market I've found most people in those environments have no problem putting a price on creativity especially if they like it and, or it's quality. Americans especially.

<Sigh>
Just hit reset instead of post... so now you get bullet points
I think Pirate wench is right selling in collectibles rather than wargames would get a better price but probably less demand. I think LOTR figures would be the way to go if your genuinely interested in making some coin. Fellowship well painted advertised as Hand painted LOTR figurines would do a good price I reckon. PLEASE never advertise any work as Pro-painted, there is so much rubbish out there claiming pro-painted nobody believes it anymore.

*laugh*
Pro painted = colours from the basic starter set painted on with the best intentions to stay between the lines. Dry brushed, then covered in nice shiny glossy varnish to give that model extra sparkle. Photo taken with deliberate blur so you can't see the quality of work until you unwrap your package
new subgroups of the pro painted genre that are appearing more often in recent times include. 'well painted' and 'master artist'

Hiya. Thought I'd jump in on this. I recently tried selling some minis painted and had some success. Check this out: img113.exs.cx/my.php?loc=img113&image=orcsbows2hnd6kv.jpgimg38.exs.cx/my.php?loc=img38&image=orcsspears8eo.jpgimg20.exs.cx/my.php?loc=img20&image=orcsswords5rq.jpgI sold tghem as 3 sets, swords, spears and bows. 2 sets were snapped up as buy now for $25 each. The other went thru auction and the same guy ended up winning them. Because that winner is a good customer of mine I gave him them all for $60. The trick is you need to have good photos. None of this blurry photo business. If you're getting blurry invest in a tripod. I have a canon G3 (so reasonably old) and a little tripod (about 15cm tall). This way even in bad light it can still take a reasonable photo. Never use a flash onto you mini as it blows the colours out. Even better, take photo during the day, in slightly over cast do shadows arent too heavy, but still bright enough to not need a flash. Also..as far as lord of the rings is going. The battle games in middle earth have made a number of the minis not valuable as they are now so common. Try scoring some rather rare models cheap, paint them nice with good photos and then sell them. Scenery is sometime hard to sell, sometimes not. Ive sold all of mine so far, my current ones have bidders but not quite made reserve. Im not in it to make money, just cover costs so I dont think ive charge to much. Good luck -LW

I rememebr seeing them at the time. Very Very nice, love the red armour.
Mate, $25 isn't a good price, unless they took you 45 minutes to do.
How much do you reckon it costs to get a plumber out? Or have a mechanic look at your car?

I guess it depends on how you look at it.
For me this is a hobby, If I can pay for my materials and enough to buy more Im pretty happy. I cant seriously see myself getting any real cash out of it (at the moment anyway with trademe as my audience)
They took maybe 3 sessions of 1hr each. I got them pretty cheap too so I more than covered my costs.
Im also new so Im learning techniques and building up a client base.
I have my eye on ebay next..but not sure how well it will work out.

Hmm thinking more
Like it or not this generally is a hobby business. I goto a model railway shop and look at the kool stuff..then I look at the price...then I walk out. I cant justify paying big prices when I have kids and family to look after.
Now if my toilet stops working and I need a plummer..I can quickly justify paying some money for them (even if Im not happy about it)
Its hard...and it sucks...but its definately a factor of this market.

That's true, but i would also say hobbiests are by they're very nature, errm, fanatical. if they want something bad enough, and it is worth the price, they will pay, maybe not today, maybe not tommorrow, but soon. It's like any luxury item.
But I don't think any of us who claim to be decent modellers should be selling stuff just to cover costs.
Stereos and computers and whatever aren't particularly necessary for life, but we still expect to paty way more than the price of the components!
I think it was pirate who first mentioned this; it's a kiwism. i never had this problem at home (and I had a LOT more competition there)

true.
I think the resin stuff of yours would sell really well on trademe actually, and even more so on ebay.
Just list it now and again to see waht fish bite.
if it doesnt sell it doesnt cost you anything.
