Ok everyone knows what a trebuchet is. For those that dont it is a medieval seige engine using a type one lever, either a fixed or free counterweight and a sling. In my woodwork class over the past term i have made myself one which reaches to as high as just between your knee and hip when it is fully drawn back. Its been great fun firing little wooden circles at people in class and getting told off but its definatly a great laugh and brings alot of attention. Id say it could easily fire up to 35 yards or so, although in the first outside testing i used golf balls which were way too heavy. Definatly beet my opponents very crudely built SPRING powered catapult with a bucket, first of their throw the bucket falls apart!! its gets rebuilt and on the next try the whole lever arm snapped cleanly in half!! bad engineering on their part Ill hopefully have pics to show sometime next week as im going to have to carry it home from school Has anybody else had any sudden inspirations to make a large seige engine? me and my friend are in the process of designing one as tall as us! ;D Let me know your thoughts on this one.

Search the web search the web...I'm sure I've seen some monster trebuchets on there...
Anybody remember that 'Scrapheap Challenge' program on tellie? There was one episode one team built a building sized trebuchet to throw a car... unfortunately their main arm buckled and the whole thing flew apart...but points for effort!

Hehe, thats really cool! congrats on doing something decent in shop class! I made TV dinner trays, cheeseboards & other equally weak things... altho I do still use my TV tray for a painting station so its not completely useless!
I saw a doco on some crazy people in europe that properly built a full size trebuchet and used it for throwing cars around... very cool!
Scrap heap challange is still on but they've started this whole "wacky racers" kind of thing where they have the same people on each week but I think there are 5 of them and they have to customize their homebuilt cars to do different challanges... its still interesting but not quite as good, in my opinion.

Ahh trebuchets. There's a guy I know down in Palmie North who is part of the medieval re-enactment scene. He has a small trebuchet which he uses to throw tennis balls at people waving swords at each other.

Haha yes i have seen a video of a PERSON being thrown by a massive treb onto some netting, looked really fun. Were just planning to through stuff at our other mates house and down on a school field, hoping to be able to throw soccer balls Im not sure how far it will go though

I saw one like that at a mediaeval fair recently, it was pretty cool, but didn't fire too far, just a novelty for the kids to play with really. The principle is dead simple though, so should be easy enough to beef up.
