How were the plastics after brake fluid, did you have to wash them much after, before they could take paint?
I wonder if Ichucked one in some coke if that would strip the paint... strips just about everything else

Ive tried both Simple green and brake fluid together to find out which works best my verdict: Simple green cause its easier on your hands, doesn't smell as bad and breaks down glue. Brake fluid is good if you dont want to break down the glue but I think simple green works better, but only just. I have stopped using brake fluid on plastics because I dont like it as much but its cheaper than simple green so if thats a consideration either will work well.
Having said that every account you get will conflict with each other which I think is an indication they work about the same.
Clean up is about the same with Simple green and break fluid, warm soapy water and a toothbrush but Simple green is less caustic if you happen to flick it onto something or your eyes.

And with that having been said, I will be striping models with simply green, that it gets the glue off is the seller, specially if the clean up us the same for brake fluid =]
besides, I need to recover the choppa/slugga arms as they are the first bits I am running out of, I got fresh heads, extras and shoota arms to just about re do every model (seems that way anyway).
Thank you all for bringing me to a decision and offering other solutions that I never would have tried.... I could never spray oven cleaner at a figure just to test if it would melt. Its the same as finding out games workshop plastic melts with some spray paints... but I guess they want to push their own sprays so why not formulate weakened plastic =]
Ya know... I think I have decided that not only do I have a poo load of orks, but I have more orks than its decent to own... (bassed on a survey of people who have a poo load of orks to paint and then buy near 80 more).
I started base coating the rest of the unit today almost finished 17 models, I got to paint the metal on 12, highlight brown on 12 and highlight green on 15. then its just eyes, claws and teeth.
Have applied MOST of the paint to one 4x2 terrain board, its looking neat. I wont get the water effect this month, no money, no space, no hope. So against some of the advice thats been given I will be flocking before hand. no actuall clock will be anywhere near water anyway... the nature of the fissures is that its about an inch away. The other board is gonna require me to buy another pot of permafill, who knows why its different to regular plaster ?
I made 6 jungle plant bases, using flying bases, took no time at all but I will definately have a cup if cold water at hand next time, the cheap plastic plants melt if the hot glue isnt cooled quickly. I am hoping a coat of matt varnish will take away the plastic look.
Glued the model that will be converted to my second Mek boy, Hes gunna have a forcefeild generator. Blasted no pictures for one. Mini comp, design or describe and ork forcefield generator, best Idea gets built best I can interperate and will join my Warbosses retinue =] I found the arm I needed for my mad dok, now all I got to do is make him a medicine bag =]
I brought a storm boy nob off trade me on sunday =] and I am so glad I did, I had converted one but he was in a theme of his own, never would have settled into the unit. he has become my first example of a cybork
I have started working on my web page, its looking ok, nothing flash but I want to get atleast a little content in it before it will go online =]
Maybe by the end of the month
Please God, deliver me unto the end of the month safely, lord give me the strength to complete my tasks as I have set them.... please

Jeez guys don't use brake fluid! That stuff is very toxic...and in particular I believe it can be absorbed through the skin and do bad things to your liver. Definitely avoid it at all costs and avoid getting it on your skin.
Methylated Spirits is safe, works and it non-toxic.

Yeah definitely don't waste money on GW fortress. You can build a much nicer one with Hirst Arts molds. Like mine! Plus with Hirst Arts molds you get to use them again and again...for years.

It all depends on when I bought them since I pay US dollars for them. If you're considering grabbing some I can't recommend them enough...and now's a good time with the NZ$ being so high against the US$...although it's eased back a bit in the last couple of weeks. Yeah I'll show you my stash of Hirst Arts molds on Sunday. I own 14 of them and they average around $60NZ each. Yikes! That's $840 worth of molds! Of course I've purchased them over three years and now have enough to build more terrain than I could ever possibly need .

Are the molds like a grown up persons lego? I love lego! Still got all my old stuff... I've even got a lego castle... but it doesn't look quite as cool as your one!
But I digress...

Pretty much. The blocks themselves are held together with Gorilla wood glue or builder's PVA...but it's just like lego for 28mm figures . Speaking of which did you see that lego Osgiliath some guy made for his GW LOTR forces? Seem like a cute idea...but didn't really look that great...

So close I can feel the 17 orks finished =] also up late last night and finished building Ardtoofs trukk, I used Chimera tracks and a little of the hull with diamont plating from the inside of the old style Land Raider. I have sculpted the doc's Doctor Bag, and added a neck to a gorkamorka plastic ork so I can put a new edition head on him =]
Hi ho hi ho

Well its been a good day for wargamming =] I finished building Ardtoofs wartrukk on saturday, Butchered a chimera and an old style land raider for parts, and as all the components came from my bits box no before photo. There was a sneak preview for Aaron and Stuart when we had a game of Mordenheim (Which was fantastic, the skaven played like the lions, OK start with a shocking finish, Go the All Blacks, well all greens in this case). at that stage I had black spray painted straight over a crappy snow cammo paintjob I did 5 - 7 years ago. Early thismorning I got inspired and slapped a coat of blood red straight over the black, took about an hour. God bless gooey creamy paint =] This morning I put on a layer of tin bitz and discovered something that will make painting all 15 - 20 of my vehicles a pleasure and do-able in about a week. Paint tin bitz over the red and wipe it off with your finger. This leaves a patchy beautiful rusty red. Then a very light drybrush of chainmail arround a few areas, followed by a very light drybrush of blood red to clean it up a bit. that took about 45 minutes. at that speed Ijustabout want to paint them ALL tonight, but IREALLY need to hit the boyz. deadline looming and I am still ALMOST finished 17 and barely started 13. plus about 56 models to base and 20 grots to paint the detail on. My life has begun again and lectures and work are sucking my time, I really had hoped to be further along by this time in the month. At least the Trukk is almost done. I really wished I had of got some WIP shots, none the less its been seen prepainted and the finished result will be worth not seeing them, I hope. The other part of my day that made it great for wargamming was I got more cash =] So off to bunnings and I came away with a big bottle of simple green concerntrate, a tin of black satin dulux spray (does it melt figures ?) bottle of PVA, a another tub of permafill (what makes it better than plaster? its so much nicer to work with) couple tubes of superglue gel (2 tubes a month at thwe moment thats a new usage high for me) and a BIG cheap brush to get the other board painted up. I might try and score a digital camera over the next day or two. make a WIP of the other 2x4 and get some pics of the models I am working on. Off theme but I painted 6 skaven heros for mordenheim between thursday and sunday afternoon (i am surprised you guys didnt smell the varnish I will take a couple pics but they arent anything to do with the contest, I just needed a painted warband =] I think I need to look up how to use static grass, I tried a bit on one of the bases of a skaven but it didnt look as good as I hoped, I think i messed up somewhere.. one of those things. I got netball tonight which nocks an hour and a half out of my evening but I plan to rip into the models for as long as possible, either finish the 17 orks or catch the other 13 up... its gunna be a long night =]

Holy crap it sounds like you've been busy! I know I'm not quite that devoted to painting my marines, tho I did paint a predaor and a commander within 24 hours, and they are extremely hardout (which is pretty hardout, trust me). All those Orks, thats why Im not collecting a horde army, it'd take forever to paint them all!

Horde armies do take a certain amount of brain control, in that you have to be able to turn it off. I usually find watching (listening) to a movie while i work helps. (I just finished watch the new Dune trilogy again.
As I mentioned elsewhere a few good tips are
1. DONT glue the arms and head. before painting. Trust me. 2. If you decorate the base. Paint it before anything else. 3 . DONT sleep, not even for a minute.
The third one is highly optional and unless, like me, you have always had issues with sleeping it probably in your interest to ignore it.
With Orks they got muscle shirts so there is no unsightly seam in the painting, the socket part of the head is completely hidden by the orks healthy posture. This allows for faster base coating, tidier body work, and less touch ups after. Marines should fall into the same catagory with arms, the shoulder pads hiding most of the join. You also get all that detail that you can see but cant get a brush to.
The down side is you can play with unpainted models but its awkward to play with models without arms.
My bases are pretty hard out. I glue sand and catlitter on, paint that like rocks then add patches of grass. its a whole lot easier and faster to me messy on the base and tidy on the feet than the other way round.
no downside to this but an added up side is a model base coated model with a completed base looks a lot more finished than just a base coated model.
What I am finding with my orks being uniformed in their units (very un-orky but this is a Bassed on Goff Wargh) is that I should be taking all 30 models on at the same time, painting 17 and having 13 more to start from scratch is frustrating as all hell.
on the other hand I wouldnt have discovered new rule number 1 if I hadnt had 13 models left out. Rule number one should allow me to paint more than 60 models in a month, it is that much faster.
On that note, I was am wondering if its acceptable for a monthly target to be "Out do myself" I got 2x20 ork elite units ('Ardboyz and storm boyz) and 2x30 ork units (shootaz and Sluggaz) almost ready to go, I got 5 bikes, 2 wartraks and a buggy and a mob of trukk boys(with trukk) for my fast attack choice and 1 killer can.
Conversion wise, 3 big gunz (zapp gunz), 10 tank bustas, 9 cyborks, another trukk, 2 killer kans, i am thinking of scratch building 5 bikes to round out the unit and doing extensive conversions to the 5 I have
Anything else I need still needs to be purchased.
at the end of this month I SHOULD have just short of 100 figures completed. leaving about 160 to go.
plus next month i will add water to my hopefully soon to be completed wargaming boards (such a nice way to avoid looking at orks, its just a shame jungles are green too).
If i keep up this pace that I am at I should finish the army in about 3 more months (thats not a promise cause I got my life back again now*yay*). Dont worry, then I can finish off my Tau (80% complete needs about $100 of models) or Blood Angels (60% complete needs a couple more models for a few of the units).
I really want to time myself on painting a unit so I can accuratly plan this stuff. given that I dont like painting half units the smallest number of models I can paint is 20.
I think i need to start a poll as to wether I am stupid, crazy or neglecting my other responsabilities. though come to think of it, none of those are good options.
