I think vehicles look better unbased, but looking at the fow forum recently I see a lot of folk do base theirs.
Those of you who don't base, how do your tanks stand up to repeated handling on the table? Do you use lacquer or dull coat or anything?

I think vehicles look better unbased too. I can't understand why people base them...I guess it makes your army look more consistent or something?
Regarding wear I generally don't paint the underside of the tracks/tires and haven't noticed any problems yet.
And I matt varnish the crap out of anything I paint.

well my recently finished carriers have had a coat of fixative, which as usual has killed the hours of weathering I added to them. Hopefully the dullcoat will bring it back.
I nearly went blind painting the markings on them yesterday, then after weathering you can't even see them!!! I've not bothered with markings on the back, but have id numbers on the left mudguard, and made-up divisional badges on the right. I bought a white gel pen to paint the numbering on the sides, but found it was too thick, so just used the brush, along with my 80x mag $2 shop reading glasses.

Whatever artist spray I can lay my hands on but usually Nuartt Matt Art Spray.
Does anybody sell Testor's Dullcoat in New Zealand?

I get mine from acorn models, but as with anything that gets shipped here, it's kinda pricey, so I save it for special jobs.
I haven't tried nuartt. Everything i've tried never really goes flat enough, but I'm trying a new one at the minute, see how that goes.

well the carriers I sprayed this morning with Kystal Kote Workable Matt Fixative look like they've been dipped in nail varnish

Hmmm I think I'm using a can of Krystal Kote myself at the moment I think since Whitcoulls were out of stock of Nuartt. Cheap, but probably the less matt matt varnish I've encountered so far

Aaggh! I sprayed my just finished commando platoon a few hours ago and have just gone for a look. I've now got a commando platoon in a convincing winter camo effect!
In desperation I've dunked them all in my bush cleaning pot. Who knows, I could have invented a new technique here.

Hmmm...too cold to varnish in Wellie at the moment? Or had the varnish not quite dried? I find if you put it on really thick it'll appear white but will eventually dry clear...
What happened in the end?

not sure; i'd used the stuff before with no problems, and Idon't think this was too thick.
anyway, none of my fixes worked, so if anything they're going to need repainting. I mightaswell just go with them for now, as they're going to look a bit shabby eventually anyway. Good excuse to get cracking on more
