Ah. I love these little guys. Such cool models even in 15mm! And such a totally mad British idea! An open topped, fully tracked MG carrier! The US can keep their jeeps, give me a universal any day . In game they're great for 'gunning and running' since they carry vehicular MG's and can add a .50 cal MG too. Plus they play the recce rules and are dirt cheap (30pts each or thereabout). I've been sorely tempted to buy the Tamiya Universal Carrier kit several times. But haven't succumbed yet...mainly because of all the scary 'after market' options that are available once you start going up scale in historical modelling. I'm worried I'd start obsessing about which etched brass exhaust cover custom kit I should be buying .

That's one reason I'm attracted to the little 15mm'ers; I quite like the idea of vehicle modelling, but I'm not anal enough to do the work and research on bigger kits. That's why I prefer doing fictional vehicles, or stuff out of my bizzare imagination, then they can't be wrong.
(Tamiya do a lot of their gear in 1:48 now, which may be worth a look - at least it's in scale with 28mm figs).

I bought a pck of tamiya 1:48 british WWII infantry yesterday on a whim, since I'm getting quite into the subject now. I've already got a box of airfix multipose 1:32 that i use for conversions, but I'm going to build some of those up stock aswell if I get the chance. Anyway, back onto the 1:48. These are very nice figures, I was expecting them to be the same as the 1:35 figures, but it looks like they they are a whole new set. I wanted the 1:48s because I had the feeling they were the same size as a "big" 28mm, and they aren'y too different; In the set you get 5 riflemen, a two man bren team, squad (sic) leader with sten, four tank crew and two carrier crew - a radio operator and a gunner. My favourite though is the farmer; a civilian waving a bottle of wine in the air, which is a nice inclusion Another nice touch, and what makes this post just about relevant, is this useful pic of a carrier on the instruction sheet; . So all in all not a bad kit. Detail is better than say citadel plastics, but not as good as a good quality 1:35 kit. Figures are accurate and well proportioned, but faces are a more cartoony than they would be on 1:35 figures. Casting is generally good, and with all the seperate limbs the figures don't have the big chunky featureless areas you can get with more solid molded figures. Quite bad mold lines all round the sprues, but they look like they will be fairly easy to remove. Speaking of sprues, there are two sprues of accessories; weapons, helmets, webbing, shovels and picks, and they should definately be of use.

Nice, I always wondered where the heck the radio was in the Universals! Now I know.
Unfortunately you'd be hard pressed to squeeze a 15mm figure into the bay that actually contains the radio panel. Particularly if he's meant to be facing forward!
Hmm...wonder if Tamiya do a 1:48 jeep?

I'm pretty sure they do. Their range of 1:48 is getting bigger, this one is no 28

The beginnings of my carrier swarm; From top left; No 1 has a hull mounted bren (made from the barrel of a 1:32 BAR), a somewhat overscale .50 cal browning made from brass and ali tubing and styrene scraps, a tow rope stored on the front deck, and a length of chain on the rear. No 2 has another hull mounted Bren (BAR again), a longer rope and chain. this one is to get a deck mounted Boyes ATR. No 3 has a hull mounted .50 cal (made from a 1:32 sas torch), chain on the front deck, camo net on the engine deck and hank of rope hanging off the side. this one will get a deck mounted Bren. All have two aerials added from music wire, not necessarily in the right places, just where I could glue them without interfering with crews and guns. Just the main colours painted and highlighted; bit of a black wash, then detailing and we're ready to add the crews. They will all ultimately get extra stowage added, but I'm trying a technique I've never used before - when they are all finished I will place piece of glad-wrap on the models and sculpt the stowage in situ, remove to harden and paint, then glue in place.

Hey there are also a few WW2 28mm scirmish rule sets out there that could be played with the 1/48th stuff. Stu how would the .45 rules set go for proper WW2 scenarios?

Well, I've got these.
But seriously, I should have these done in a couple of days, and I've nearly got a commando platoon. I've got the command team and one squad (rifle/mg, piat and mortar teams) done, plus two smg teams for the second squad. I've got a 5 man rifle/mg team primed and they will be next.
I've got plenty infantry figures, so I'm going to try and knock some of those out quickly if i can, then get some more vehicles and guns. not sure what yet, maybe artillery or anti tank.
