On a whim I recently bought the MMP Advanced Squad Leader Starter Kit #3. Seems like an amusing war game, erring on the side of realism quite a bit judging from how horribly easy MGs and pin down and rout squads advancing in close order across open ground . Do you play it Phil?

Nope, never heard of it.
.. but then just had a look for it. Sounds interesting, all those avalon hill games used to interest me when i was younger, but i never actually played any. The second hand book shop down the road often has some in for some reason.

It's been around for years (I first played it with a mate around '88) but I've never been tempted to take the plunge until MMP starting releasing their ASL 'Starter Kits'. Ie. Simplified versions of the main ASL rules that build up to the full rules. So Starter #1 had Infantry and squad weapons, #2 adds Ordnance (Arty and AT guns) and #3 adds AFV's. Once #3 came out I had to grab a copy for my gaming collection. It's pretty intense reading the very dense rules, but they do make sense once you dry run a few rounds quietly in your living room
