Do they really work to stop the paint drying out? I'm quite partial to the citadel metallics, but I just opening my tin bitz pot (screw top) and the paint has dried in a perfect dome the exact shape of the interior of the lid. And shaking the jar doesn't sound tooo good, no sign of anny slosh at all. The rest of my metallics sound teh same too, even after I've spent time declogging the threads of the jars before storage. So now I am wondering whether to replace the couple of citadel metallics I have with more of em, or try something new

I'm slowly junking citadel for tamiya, mostly for the latter's more realistic colours, but they do seem to be better paints all round too. In the past I have had pots of tamiya unopened for years that have been fine when I've gone back to them.
Their metallics are nicer too - more like metal than "metallic paint" if you see what I mean. (probably finer pigments) but they don't have quite the range of metallics that citadel do.

I've not tried the tamiya ones. I still have my reaper master series set, but while they are nice paints with decent coverage I find the metallics in the range rather dull. The fleck size is extremely fine, and I think that is what limits the reflectiveness. I also have the golden paints metallics but both the reaper and golden paints are only in the silver and gold rannges. I like tin bitz from the citadel range and I'm on the lookout for a convincing copper too

Flip tops are better... but there is a tendency that the overspill (after shaking the pots) will remain in the top section of the flip tops, and since the flip tops have a 'spoon' that allows the paint to drop back into the pot itself, that's where all the excess (i.e. expensive) paint remains and hardens.
I'm trying to find other alternatives especially for metallic paint, i'm trying some of the more expensive art supply store acrylic paints (those are usually 8-10 bucks depending on brand) but they have heaps of pigments compared to anything that the miniature paints can bring about. But they come in tiny little pots and I'm not even going to bother getting non-metallic paints. (unless they're cheaper.)
Fliptops are the only real alternative, but Valejeo (never can spell that right) is always there... I'm planning to buy a whole lot of those to try out different colours (namely bright yellows, and skin tones and 'russian greens' ... emeralds, all the exotic colour ranges that aren't offered by Citadel)

One of the things that has bugged me about the plastic dropper bottles is that they can become clogged and need clearing out with pins. But I was on the reaper website and see that they now sell flat tops to fit their bottles so you cann take the dropper part out and use them like a normal dip type pot. I might try this when I have managed to rack up enough wants to justify an order to reaper. I do like their triads system, it's kind of nice just being able to order a set of three for a particular skin tone or shade of red etc. One brand I had forgotten about and was curious if there is a NZ stockist is Derivan minis, they're made in australia and come in at a whopping 36ml each, and have an interesting top that I've heard others rave about. www.matisse.com.au/pages/minis.htm It's just so annoying trying to get hold of a smmall order to try them out as shipping always ends up costing so much and to make it worth it you really need to take a chance and order more stuff. They retail in aussie at about $5.60 each, and $7.60 for the metallics. Maybe I just need to learn to paint decent non metallic metals and not worry about where to find a good metallic paint

If you weren't in Petone, we could've merged the orders together and just get everything we want in one deal! lol...
I find NMM so confusing, but I'm still experimenting with it; sometimes there's too much white and it looks like 'flint' instead of metal, and sometimes there's not enough, and it just looks like slates of rock...

I went rummaging through my cupboards and found my golden paints fluiid acrylics set. It has several interference colours and metallics. I just painted up a quick chart on paper and the golden paints are by far the shiniest metalliest of the lot. I have reaper and citadels to compare them too. They come in 30ml bottles for around $5 us which is pretty good. I know there are NZ stockists but it's such a nightmare trying to google and hunt down NZ stores. dick blick has them but they charge too much in shipping if my memory serves www.dickblick.com/zz006/38/ if anyone comes across a NZ store selling them online at a decent price let me know, I want to get some more of the interference shades because they rock my world.

Privateer press has a range of paints out now, very nice to use and come in the old style citidel pot. Formulated by Matt wilson, who did the old"good" gw paint, he is also the owner of PP. They are made by foundry, which are very nice paints also.
