Pretty sure this has been covered here beore but couldn't find annything using search.
I want to make a mold of something fairly small, overall the mold size would be not much larger than a matchbox. I only want half a dozen or so castings and I don't want to buy vast quantities of rtv silicone and resin. I just don't want to be out of pocket another 'hundred and whatever else it costs' bucks like I seem to get hit with everytime I want to try something new. Is there anywhere to buy really small amounts of stuff for just making a few castings? like a sample pack or something. I found an alumilite kit on ebay which actually looked pretty good, despite it being expensive (as kits are) it did contain everything needed.. just in quantities I don't need, and at $46us for shipping plus the $62us cost it was a bit insane to go to that extreme

Depending what you are doing, you might be able to get away with making a mold from tube silicon sealant. I've had no luck with this method, but I know others have, Kreative Kim being one. Also kneadatite can work for small molds with no undercuts, so that's worth a thought.
I dealt with a crowd in Aussie a while back who I believe offered sample packs, but to be honest I gave up on them because they were so hopeless, and can't even remember who they where.
Another thought, if you happen to live near another sculptor / moulder / caster you might be able to persuade me him to do you a favour

Green stuff casting is a viable option I reckon. I've used this for small details in the past. To be honest you can also do extremely crude 'plastiscene casting' the same way. I may or may not have resorted to creating temporary molds from clay in the past. I made a bunch of crystals by carving some wax candles into crystalline shapes, pushing them in a lump of clay and then splashing some plaster in. Worked suprisingly well but then crystals are pretty simple convex shapes...

Green stuff casting does work well. A tad pricy if you use the gw stuff tho.

I've seen what the pirate wants cast. trust me, no simple methods are going to work!

I think the art store just along the road from work does some 2 part rubber in fairly small size and at a low price... I will try and get there at lunch tomorrow and verify my claims

T shot into Gordon harris and they have these three 'Gedeo' products www.album.co.nz/photoset/2227Sorry they arent displayed here, I cant remember my photobucket log-in and album.co.nz are TFW's not letting anyone load from their site. My favourite is the Siligum, a 2 part gel silicon.

Hey Dustan those look very interesting, are you going to do some experimenting?
They all seem to be for short run casting though and I suspect resin casting using those products will really hammer the molds since it tends to destroy Ultrasil molds in 10-20 casts.
Hmmm except for the Siligum product, but at that volume for those prices you'd be better off order some Ultrasil from TopMark imho.
I imagine the Latex product is also designed for body casting too.

hey thanks for that, I'm not sure any of those products are exactly what I need. I think I'll just have to get sewing some more and make a few more sales and buy myself a kit from the ebay
BTW album do allow linking now. I had a bit of a spit at them when they put a stop to it because it seriously screwed up my sale threads on other forums. I'm a paid up subscriber to album and expect to be able to use my pic hosting site to actually you know, like host my pictures! I suggested to them that if they're having bandwidth issues they either stick to crippling the non paying members or at least provide us with thumbnails that can link through to the site. Don't know if my shirty email provoked anything but they did reply back to me ratherquickly and said they'd reset it back to how it was.
I literally had hundreds of photos that were showing up on forums with the not available, made me look like a complete amatuer

Yeah I don't really need to be using album considering I pay for hosting at Orcon. Its just I havent got an easy way of dumping the photos there. I should find some PHP gallery software.
I would try some siligum cause it makes me think of silly putty for modelers, able to lift impressions etc but your right Stu, I would need more cause I am a hapless modeling junkie with an addiction factor of 10/10.
Latex is a pain to use, I used to have a jar of it some 12 or 13 years ago. its a product that realy suits someone with patience as you have to apply layer after layer after layer... The trick to a good mold is paint a thin layer with all the brush strokes in one direction then the next layer with the brush strokes at a 90 degree after a 5-7 layers like this you paint a layer on ther lay thin mesh cloth into the wet latex folloed directly by a touchup layer to cover the cloth the another 5-6 layers like the first... it takes a good 8 hours for a thin layer to dry in nice weather.
After all that (a good weeks woirth of work) build a box and fill it with plaster, this makes a snug frame so you dont get any deformation when you pour.
Why would anyone use latex. well its good for taking texture impressions like from rocks, that way you can 'wrap' the mold around a hill and cast the mean as cliff faces, there is a great guild on woodland scenics regarding this. So all in all its good for small or large low complex detail (undercuts etc).
Its not a product I would want to use again purely for the time consumption (and its uber-stinky)
Less layers will result in a one or two use mold whilst lots of layers with reinforcing cloth will last a good while.

Pirate Wench: where can one find your galleries? I'm curious to see what you get up to . From memory you're a fantasy doll maker? Or have I got that completely wrong? Dustan: You know me man! Quick and Dirty is my motto! That there latex stuff sounds like a nightmare?! How many hours drying between coats? How many coats! One night's sleep is the most I can wait for anything I work with to cure... Ultrasil can lift the detail off the masking tape I use to hold my pour boxes together already . I really should get some slate pieces and mold up a 'generic rock face' I can re-use because it would be excellent for Fantasy terrain.

I've used gedeo stuff - overpriced and not that great.
Latex certainly has it's uses, I've got a couple of latex molds lying around, but I don't use them much
I think I mentioned a while back that i wasn't using album any longer for the same reason, but if you fiddle with your piuc urls you can link to them (about 90% of my pics here are on album)
