hey never done it before and i am wondering is it all good if you put it over your nicely detailed bases sand and static grass etc.you just apply it like spray undercoat i suppose??

Yup, just the same, couple thin layers. put it on too think and you will get nasty looking dribbles

can you put over your static grass and stuff like that without ruining it??

It's much better to varnish first, then add grass. Not so much that the varnish will ruin the grass, but you can garantee if you lay the grass down then varnish, you will find a piece of grass you had not noticed stuck to the figure, and it will be there for all eternity, trapped under the varnish.
so in my book, varnish then grass

hmmm ok then never thought of it like that.but still it does not ruin the grass does it.i already have done them yousee and it would be a bummer if i ruined my model by having the base destroyed.

I use spray varnish, which is ok on top of grass. brush-on varnish may effect your grass
