For doing big stuff I buy cheap tubes of acrylic from the warehouse; they're not great, but they do the job.
I ran out of black the other day so went to get some more. They didn't have the one I normally get, so I plumped for a different one, figurring it's not for any mission critical paintng, it'll be alright.
This stuff was in a foil toothpaste type tube, branded "venus". It's not acrylic. It appears to be water colour, gouache or possibly poster paint (I'm not an epxert on other media so i'm not sure). I first got suspicious at the drying time, very long. Then once dry it was way flatter than any pigment impregnated polymer would be. Finally, it's bloody flaking off the piece I painted.
It may still be useful for tinting glue or filler mixes, or possibly for washes, but I'm quite prepared to write off the couple of bucks I paid for it.

I got a cheap posterpaint from there in a clear plastic tube with white writing. AVOID IT LIKE THE PLAGUE!!!
After it dries you just need a drop of water to turn it back into paint... that means if you paint over it it will turn back into paint =\ Threw out the tube without keeping the name sorry =\

I think that stuff you are talking about is the brand i normally get - they do water colour and acrylic, the acrylic is fine. Tube about 4" long, for about $2?

These days I use GW exclusively for figures and Resene acrylic interior house paint test pots for terrain.
Cheap 'art' paints are universally rubbish imho.

And your choice in paints reflects in your work... I got a look at the blending in your mordenheim canal the other night. Gosh its pretty =]

Heh ta - the blending is actually pretty mediocre but an green ink wash hides a lot of painting crimes

Cheap 'art' paints are universally rubbish imho. That's just not true stu. You can get budget paint that may not be up to to all tasks, but is certainly useable in the right circumstances, for instance tinting filler or mixing with pva. I know many figure modellers (albeit large scale figures rather than minis) who use craft store tube acrylic exclusively. Cheaper paint usually means coarser pigment, which is generally a bad thing, or less concentated pigment, which generally isn't, especially if you are planning on diluting the stuff. I forgot to mention in the first post, the stuff I bought was actually labelled "acrylic paint". If it is acrylic I'll eat my hat (after filling it with contents of the tube)

Heh heh. Ink. the magic answer to all your painting woes. Anyone remember the original citadel washes? they were nice, not inks as such, just concentrated pigments in a thin rather than thick medium. They were excellent, I don't know why they stopped doing them. I went to buy a set a few years after I'd bought my first lot, got them home without realising they'd changed, and was like "AAgh! Shiny!"

The red is the one I was remembering particularly for some reason. The little nippley bottles? They were damn useful.
