Dipping, The Dustan Way.
Hello All, this is a NZers guid to dipping with no work in progress shots yet (I will modify this first post). None the less I am now Qualified to give more than 2 cents on this topic.
What you will need
Models (I Used a Genestealer)
Undercoat (I use Spraykote White Undercoat $8.99 at the warehouse)
Hand full of paints (GW in my case)
1 Tin of Wattyl Colourwood All In One Satin (I used Dark Mahogany $17.99 for 250ml at Placemakers)
A Cardboard box (large)
Some Ventilation (Outside is good)
Heres a Pack Shot of the Magic painting juice.
Method
1. Undercoat your model, Use the colour spray that you want most of the model to be or else you might as well hand paint them. I recomend getting a decent matt spray cause the paint seems to stick better. I use spraycote cause its my favorite
2. Paint in the other colours, just like painting any other model. My nids will be white chiton armour (undercoat white) with Imperial Strike Green for flesh. Since the dip is Varnish and stain it pays to paint the teeth tounge and eyes also.
3. Happy with the base coat, great! Once you rounded up a few base coated models dip the whole thing into you tin of 'All In One'. I wore a latex glove and did it by hand but using pva to stick it to something first would be fine. let some of the excess drip back into the tin, I waited till drips took about 2 seconds between.
4. Shake that model into the large cardboard box with a flicking wrist action. Little splaters of all in one will fly off and unless you can make a stain mess over everything its good to have a catcher. Flick until your happy with how it looks, the all in one wont dribble much if you flicked it enough...
5. This is why I am so happy with the Wattyl product. The Drying time listed said 4-6 hours touch dry, which means good to handle. I had mine sitting out in the sun for about an hour and it was almost perfect.
The Results
Here are a few rather poor Web Cam shots of the finished Stealer. One Down Fifty Four to go.
Notes
I use and recomend the Wattyls All In One BUT they seem to have a very small colour pallet. One darker than mine (scorched brown but transparent), Dark Mahogony (mine) which looks redish brown over the white but very nice. and about 4 other shades which are almost flesh tones (great if you have an army of shiny flesh coloured things to paint).
Dont want to use Wattyl, What you need to find is Stain and Varnish in one tin. it may say Stains and protects. End of the day its a polyeurothane thing just like varnish. Oh and make sure the models your dipping can fit in the tin. My one is the smallest they had and has good clearence for a stealer.
Use your All In One during the day, it doesnt work as well in the cold. Shake or stir it properly (which means heaps) failiure to do so may result in thicker less fluid Stain.

This is the forst and best site I found pertaining to the method, it is the one from which I derived the above method.

This one will 'Revolutionise' the whole dipping experience, some clever cookie realised you can make a 'Nid Spinner'

Here is one that shows a slightly different method on a space marine. They painted it on to keep it tidier

And a Thread in another forum on the topic but this time using Kroot (wish I had of know about this before painting my kroot) This has other examples with a proper dipped marine and tyranids also (maybe more)
