Hello, I am new to this forum and I have been working on a Maori/NZ Themed Space marines army. Just would want to know if anyone has good ideas, for weapons, decorations, carvings, etc.. I have made a M.O.A (Mobile, offensive, artillery) drednought and I have some tiahas and patus but I need something else.. Any Ideas would be great, I will also trade for stuff, if you have anything useful Thanks

not many ideas myself, but interesting concept; don't think we've seen anything quite like that on here before.
I guess all your marines will have moko on their helmets. replacing their guns with something that look like muskets could be cool too.

A cute idea, is the head honcho going to have a feather cloak too?. The muskets sound good because when I first read the post I was thinking about ranged weapons. Maori weaponry was all basically hand to hand stuff and that wouldn't fly with space marines would it? I was checking this link whakaahua.maori.org.nz/weapons1.htm I like the look of the hoe nice poointy tip annd a decent flat area for clubbing and they rather niftily double as a paddle! rather ingenious really, a war party could paddle up in their waka and have weapons already in hand. I'm also thinking along the concept of alternate realities and not necessarily what weapons maori had, but what would they have if they really existed as space marines, what kind of weaponry would they have developed and how would they add a maori flavor to the technology available to them.

Kroot rifles are a good place to start for musket style bolters, (all the Kroot accessories would helpful)

sounds like a great original idea, I am surprised that no one has thought of it already.
I think there is a few key areas you could focus on in regards to painting and conversion.
1) Dark tanned skin is a must for all warriors. 2) I recommend as many bareheads as possible to illustrate Maori background through skin colour and facial Muku tattoos. 3) Like someone mentioned feather capes for leaders but this depends on your greenstuff skills. 4) Feathers in hair for warriors, Empire fantasy plastics have abundance of these. 5) I wouldnt go for muskets as it takes away from the marine technology and would look out of place but the idea of the green stone clubs is good and probably quite easy to make/convert with greenstuff, maybee have these hanging from warriors as ceremonial emblems etc similar to space wolf bone necklace. 6) Depending on you level of free hand skills I think Maori symbols/patterns would look great on the arm I have seen it done before with celtic designs and it looks really good, maybee a careful selection of a neutral armour colour lgith tan, cream etc would be good to bring stronger focus to the artwork. 7) Possibly greenstuff a few tongue poking out and intense bugling white eyes.....?
but remember keep the conversions sutle and not over the top simple is often better and desired impact can be gained from a unique uniformed look.

Thanks, I have already done brown skin and moko, but I cannot get a decent dark green that looks effective. What models exactly have feathers on these. I agree with the muskets, so I will paint the Bolters up with carvings. Thankyou, I never thought of bone necklaces. I have also just finished painting Details on a whirlwind (Took me 4 Hrs, not including undercoating and conversions.) Also do you know how I can get small enough toungue that look effective as my green stuff skills are useless

there feathers are from the older plastic emprie soldiers but the new ones probably have them too maybee ask a round in the swap forum?
if you dont want to use green stuff maybee try tiny cut out pieces of card, gloss coat for strength, dunno?
are you going to put some pictures up?
Maybee use a wood base on parts of the bolters?

One thought that occurs for easy tongues is trimmed plastic sprue shavings possibly?
Dustan is the master of this I believe and there used to be a tutorial for building plants out of plastic shavings somewhere on the web but I couldn't find it...

Hi, Thanks c0d3monk33, the web page is on Terragenisus (Not sure on spelling), I never thought about that even though I had made a few 'sprue plants'.

Yeah Terragenesis posted an article but we had our own one ages ago. pityak.proboards40.com/index.cgi?board=howto&action=display&thread=1122613772Created 29/7/05 it should predate the Terragenesis one and should be before the GW article (which was done with eavy metal class) I am sure the technique has been around even longer because I started doing it at least 10 years ago... and someone would have done it before then.

Maori astartes eh
I'm planning on a colonial NZ + Maori Auxiliary Imperial Guards army, but haven't found any decent bodies to represent the Maori troopers, I might end up using the freecompany bodies with different heads...
But in terms of your project, it might be good to invest on the Dark Angels' new captain... he comes draped in a cloak, just cover that with feathers or that sprue plants method. I reckon you should leave the bolters as bolters, but maybe craft some patterns onto them. I did research on Maori weapons before, and they seem to just use whatever they could get their hands on, but personalised them intricately.
Also helmeted heads will be fine in my opinion, just make them different by painting/sculpting details on the helmet's front area, in a 'moko style'.
