I know a guy who one day cranked his stereo up full, walked around town plotting the maximum distance away that you could still hear it, then posted the resulting map on google earth.

You can do something similar by combining a GPS unit and a wireless enabled laptop..
Driver round town recording the location and the signal strength of the broadcasting wireless networks. Many of which would be unsecure. On yer lunch break and need to get an email out =] drive to the nearest 'hotspot' and hijack some 'free' unsecured wireless network.
Alternatively track down the house that is broad casting (signal strength), knock on the door and offer a nominal fee to secure their wireless =D
