Has anybody dealt with this Aussie firm in the past? www.miniaturescenery.com/index.aspThey sell pre-cut 3mm MDF sci-fi buildings that aren't too expensive and look mildly interesting. Just wondered if anybody had use them/heard of them?

What a cool idea. Wouldn't take much to smarten them up into some pieces

Yeah I was quite surprised to find them on the web...I was grubbing around for paper 28mm terrain for the latest post on my blog and stumbled across them. I quite agree. They look like a superb basis for further detailing. For a couple of hundred bucks and minimal effort you could have a pretty full table! Although since I'm a Hirst Arts junkie with a bunch of gothic molds I don't know if I'd use them myself... Does make me wish I owned a laser balsa/MDF cutting printer though. They're not too pricey these days ... I saw one on the web recently for around $2000us. Damn why do my Lotto numbers never come up!

should try the numbers off 'lost' huh ? win some cursed money...
I am keen on these buildings aye... cheap, effective and built of an easy to use material...
It looks like they get some other croud to cut them for you... any one know who rents CNC time in auckland ? I asked if Massey Uni did... they said no... whould take a paper there and sneak in after hours =]

that's a thought - if you were prepared to get enough cut, it would probably be economical to approach a commercial cutter.

Their prices are actually pretty reasonable I think. $114nz for a six part Imperial ruin seems pretty good.
Did you check out the entire range though? Those 'sand' buildings look *perfect* for Ork themed terrain. Heck, even the simple flat MDF surfaces would work for Ork construction with a little minor embellishment.
One thought that does spring to mind: Why 3mm MDF? With a laser cutting system couldn't you do exactly the same thing with 5mm foam board? And wouldn't it be almost as sturdy and half the price?
Hmmm maybe we should investigate bespoke laser cutting services in Auckland Dustan? You could make a pattern pretty easily from a foam card prototype.

I used to be a sign writer and I am still a dab hand with a CAD program. It people are interested, sketch some designs, I can sort them into workable templates.

I looked at laser cutting of ceramics for my Masters project years ago. Laser cutting will only cut certain materials and only up to certain depths. You probably can cut foam board with them but it would pay to visit or phone and ask first.
Now water cutters on the other hand :-D

I've done a little research. Apparently laser cutters should be able to handle 5mm foam board. Since I guess sign writers occasionally use it don't they...or is that advertisers I'm thinking of?
You're a man of many skills Mr Dustan. We should definitely talk about it I reckon...

Many skills indeed Master Stu =] I work jobs till they cant teach me much more. I have had lots of jobs as a result =]
I have already completed basic designs for imperial walls. Stackable optionally modular and easy to cut with a rotary tool (I got one yesterday and the cutting disc should be sweet for cutting Foamcore.
I am going to install a CAD program later and make the blueprints.
once i am on their I can make it interlocking. add detail and such much easier.
I wanna cut foam core tonight so I might build a mock up corner later =]
I have tried to avoid looking at the web site above, i dont want to duplicate theirs... though one I got something done I will go back for inspiration =]
