Hey it would be great if you could try post some pics of yours, as an inspiration for the rest of us... the drill idea soulds much easier than using a compass cutter.. might even work on mdf board mounted on polystyrene

I reckon I would go for something like that; picture frame, mdf and and a hole saw.
Incidentaly, If anyone needs a brace and bit for doing holes, I've got access to hundreds of second hand ones. They're about $10, and all good quality, Stanley and brands like that. In fact if anyone needs any tools, power or hand, it might be worth your while checking with me first, I have a good source for second hand tools. (And high end stereo gear and cellphones as it happens)

Magnets turn up in the most unlikely of places. My better half has just started selling tupperware and her name badge just turned up. pins? nah, it's held on with rare earth magnets!

I've just bought some sheet form trademe for $5 so I'll let you know how that shapes up.
I've already got my figures on steel bases, plan to cut steel regiment bases for movement, and have found a socket set box that holds the figures nicely. Now I need to decide wether to put the magnets on the figures, or the regiment bases and box.

I'll try and post some pics of my tray asap for you all to have a look at. I'll include pics of the tray, the magnets, and the underside of the minis, so with any luck that should be within 24 hours

Put the magnets in the box, that way you can use the box for any army that has steel bases, if you put the magnets on the figures than every base or figure you add will cost you more magnets

That's a good point. I was thinking the other way, put them on the figures so I wouldn't have to put them on the regiment bases and the box. And I'd be able to stick on them on the fridge

if you made magnetic terrain you could save space and play games on a verticle board instead of horizontal... hehe Fridge wars, Rule Book - First draft The Memo board counts as dificult terrain, childrens art work counts as smoke and the pile of brochures and coupons is a hill

Well my magnet need are satiated for the foreseeable future. In the scav to end all scavs I took the dog for a walk today and came home with two magnetic sheets, each 700mm x 500mm, about the size of a sheet of A2

Regarding the magnets on the minis - the magnets are on the board, and a common washer is onthe bottom of the base nice and cheap. And fridge-wars?? That would rule!!

I was thinking about the original design that inspired this thread last night and if I was going to do something similar it would have a sheet steel base and a magnet on each model.

So you'd do it that way? But how would you decorate the steel sheet base - or would you use rare earth magnets so it wouldn't matter?

I would use a sheet metal base, then the mdf layer with the holes in on top of that. so ther mdf layer would be decorated like a normal base / diorama, and the holes for the figures would be steel lined. mags on your figures and away you go.

Ah I see what your planning to do and I like it!
Might have to steal it for my Iron Warriors base display tray instead of the way I've done my first one.
