you could also go low tech and dump a pile of glue on and spread it with a stiff piece of card or plastic or use premade tools like a plasterers spatula... or the kitchen spatula, so long as the person who cooks doesnt mind that is...

I hope you're going to use a mix of coarse ballast and sand? I find that if you simply glue sand down to a surface you basically end up with sand paper - which isn't very good for your models in the long run. There's two solutions to your problem that spring to mind: 1) Don't use PVA and sand. Go to Resene and ask for a 1 litre tin of 'textured paint'. This is a white acrylic undercoat that has been mixed with some kind of special sand (it's very uniform and rounded) that is designed to go under another coat of normal wall paint to give it texture. It covers very well and I can tell you from personal experience it will definitely go over lightly sanded polystyrene. It also results in a less gritty finish that's much kinder to figures. It also works well as a base coat to built up coarser textures on. 2) Use PVA and sand but pre mix them. So mix your sand in with watered down PVA and just slap it on with a big wide brush. Be prepared to wash the brush out periodically because the sand/PVA 'sludge' will really gum it up after a while. This works much better than applying glue and THEN applying sand believe me. I alway use 'sludge' these days to cover any area with my special sand/ballast mix for ground texture . And by 'ballast' I mean Woodland Scenics Model Railway 'Ballast' which is basically very fine gravel. Bug a few bags of different coarseness and mix them up with some sand. Instant varied ground texture. My 2c!

Cheers for the dedication =]
I'm feeling the same about my board, the ideas coming out here are top notch and where getting all sorts of ideas from shoe string to GW budget. The level of input from our community seems to warrant them as dedication pieces to those that inspire and help us.
As an idea, You know how youve got those Wicked as bits of junk in our bits boxes/storage depot that are just begging to be used for something, maybe we need to get real vocal about what we need and start resource sharing... for example I got couple meters of 1 inch ribbed wire ducting that makes great trim, pipe work or baricades, maybe even pillars and all I would want is some interesting piece of rubbish that someone has too much of or no longer wants to work the project with...
Course I know how hard it would be to part with some of my favourite bits of junk. I guess this is more a topic for the swap shop.
Time to go and do my ground cover now, its been to long painting troops and not enough time terraforming.

Oh yeah, if you wanna name a drop pod after me, Dustanycis (Pron. dust-on-eye-sus) is a much more marine sounding name and also a in thing with some of my closer friends.
Also for fear of *singing* "The good ship, dustand-pop"
Up to you of course =]

Well i've just spent 4 days in Chch (didnt get any shopping done ) but I dod have a lot of time to thinkabout my board, which is good. I have some pics for inspiration for the drop pods, so I might sit down and work on them tonight after I finish painting a tactical squad. And about the "junk" trading, that is such a good idea, I know I have all sorts of cool junk lying around that others might want, so if you need anything just gimme a yell and I'll see what I can scrounge up
