Hey all out there
I am in desperate need of some help! I have been charged with making a 4'x4' games table for 40k, with a Kroot theme... OK actually I wanna make a table for myself ;D. Only problem is, I don't know what to put on the table. I know there needs to be lots of jungle, but what do i need as far as buildings, etc go? I've looked everywhere on the 'net and all I can find is Tau this, Tau that.
Help!

I say if it's Kroot themed you ignore Tau buildings! Tau buildings are always represented by nice curved and rounded structures on GW's table. Unfortunately these kind of shapes are hard to make nicely yourself. I reckon you wouldn't go far wrong looking to the GW Lustria tables for inspiration. Maybe slap down a ruined stone ziggurat in the middle of the jungle and/or some Kroot themed ruined totem statues maybe? Check out uk.games-workshop.com/lustria/gamesday-table/1/ for some ideas. Although you'd want less buildings more jungle obviously. And for plastic jungle plants? One word: SPOTLIGHT. Spotlight sell bags of plastic aquarium plants from China for $2 a bag. You could spend about $20 and have more than enough instant jungle. Hope that helps!

Woah sweet as, I looked in the new WD and saw the massive table and thought "wow thats pretty cool, and could be Kroot like". As for the jungle plants, thats a good idea. If you need any more information about the theme of my table check out my post in "Miniature Fluff", it tells the background of my army and therefore provides an insight into what im looking for.

Now I think about it, Kroot are basically an American Indian rip off imho. So as far as buildings go maybe you shouldn't bother. They're a nomadic hunting tribe so fixed buildings would seem to be of the question. Temples too for that matter I guess...maybe some cool wooden totems made from balsa wood?
You could do a hide tent or two. Maybe something cool with a strange tepee constructed from some kind of scaly lizard hide. I'm thinking like the texture on the back of GW's lizard men plastics.
Whatever you do make sure you post some photos up here!
My 2c.

Of course i'll be posting photos ;D always keen to show off what I'm doing.
I'm thinking of having an encampment to one side of the board, with tents and a fire and the likes, maybe some dead Kroot, etc, and on the other side of the board a SM drop-pod site, where the Sanctus Legion have dropped out of orbit to kill the gribbly Kroot. The rest of the board will be "jungle plants", eg. whatever plant-like things I can get from the $2 Shop ;D

Hey there, Games workshop have this anoying thing where by each countries GW website has different articles and tips. There are templates for Kroot tents on the US site us.games-workshop.com/games/40k/tau/terrain/tau_kroot_encampment.htmI have built a couple pieces of Tau terrain and had a how to on terragenesis before the boards got hacked. I can recreate it if you wanted to build some but if you just want Kroot, thats cool. Kroot are suposedly evolved from bird like creatures, they are tribal and predatorial. I would aim for structures not unlike the beast men, a bit of influence from the skaven. You could also incorperate fantasy orcs. I would build adobe buildings with brush bristles sticking out to give it a nest feel. Lean-to tents and canopies around a imperial bunker. Maybe watch Disneys aladin and get some ideas. If your kroot do infest on imperial outpost, you could use less primal building materials, corugated shacks, armoured plates as walls. In my mind, anything Kroot built will be from materials scavenged from their surroundings. If it wasnt their jungle it is more likely to be tents, but if it is their neck of the woods then they would settle and build a little more. It would also be cool to have a GIANT dead tree that had been hollowed out, kinda like troll building from warcraft (I think they looked like logs) Come to think of it the Kroot wouldnt look to out of place in Warcraft 3 orc building... The smaller ones at least. Heres a page on bird nests, some look cool like the tailor bird whitch stitches leaves as insulation around the nest... www.50birds.com/GNest1.htmThats about as far as I got with ideas for Kroot terrain, hope that helps or gives you more to go on...

Woah cool you guys are a wealth of information, keep it coming!
I can see it in my mind now, ruined outpost surrounded by primitive tents, giant trees with platforms in it, and a crater filled with SM drop pods, all nestled amongst vibrant trees and a few rivers, it's gonna kick ass!

I just checked out that site dustan and those templates will be quite usefull, I'm thinking of making them out of kitchen towel soaked in PVA to give a hide/skin effect. The only problem with GW is that they dont put much attention towards the Kroot, and every little thing that can be found is rare and valuable, so those tents will definately be on my board

I knocked up 2 small and one large tent in an afternoon, I havent quite finished them yet but one of my mates was telling me about how the SAS have camo netting over them, esentially all round the tent they got peg and poles of different lengths to drape the camo net over, this results in what looks like part bush part rock... I will make another set of 3 on one pase and then a few to scater round. Like stu said they are real native american rip offs, never thought of them like that even though the GW tents look like teepees. wow no paragraphs yet, this post is so unstructured, its just not characteristic =]
I went to spotlight today and got a few packs of the aqurium plants ($2.75 per pack), they only had 2 types (low on stock) but they also had the alovera replicas that looked like big thick leaved flax bush things... sadly the non aqurium ones range from 3 to 10 dollars making the other suitable ones a little less attractive.
Let us know how you go at the $2 shop, I am also making a jungle board (jungles rock) and I am real gunna need LOTS, for me WH40K is all about blocking line of sight... I'm convinced that you should never be able to see further than 24 - 30 inches, in real warfare people are less inclined to charge over a padock at people with guns... I wouldnt. And before you say something about an Orc player would want alll that cover (I have grots for that job) I also play Tau and SM (BA) who can both benefit from big open fire arcs.
Warhammer fantasy however does require open spaces, and a relatively uncluttered table. Armies that marched into combat in rank and file need that space to manuver.
Thats me and how I like it anyways.
By the way good forum topic, we gotta keep it alive cause everything I am reading is gold =]
YAY the jungle boards =]

I reckon, go the jungle! I did try a city board (hence the old posts about city terrain) but I got bored, and then my dog absolutely TRASHED the board, damn dog...
I'm thinking of spending about $30-40 on jungle plants from $2 shop, and I'm going to Christchurch next week GO BIG CITIES!! More shops there ;D
I've got a plan for my board now, i'll post it as soon as my computer stops throwing a spazz

Visit album.co.nz/a?878 to see the proposed map of my board. The thumbnail looks a little pale, but when you view the whole pic it looks fine. Damn resizing, along the bottom it says abandoned outpost and ruined walls.

Ok I've got the plans sorted out, but now I've reached my next problem: how the f*ck do I cover a 4' board with glue?? I need to cover a large portion, (eg 4/5) of my board with sand, and I'm not sure how the hell you would cover a while board with glue... Do you just use a very big brush??

simple as that I would say. maybe a roller, or a spray bottle works well for large areas. Dilute your pva a little, and spray away.
