I didn't even notice the joins first time I looked!
Have you tried norski kleert-kast? I've just been given a jar of it but no catalyst and I'm wondering if it's worth trying.

That's cause I cheated and took a low 'pov' shot that hides the joins quite nicely . They're a bit more obvious from a playing angle (ie. 3 feet about the table) but I still need to do a bit of minor re-varnishing around the joins as I've sanded them back a bit. But yeah the canal is made from 3 1'x1' tiles. I've never heard of Norski Kleer Kast! Is this a TopMark product or from a different supplier? Sounds interesting...is it a translucent two part resin? With a name like that it sounds like it should be...

it's "diamond clear casting plastic". Might give it a try if i can find the catalyst.

Sounds nifty. Post some pics! Where did you get it from?
I laughed at a recent White Dwarf that was flaunting some 'special limited edition invisible Frodo!' figure that of course was just their normal Frodo figure cast in a clear plastic.
Games Workshop eh?

Yeah I saw that Frodo - good ol' GW charging suckered in consumers for useless things. On a more positive note - that canal looks really awesome, it's inspired me to work on some water features of my own (for my Word Bearer's jungle terrain, however. Not quite as cool as city themed terrain but city stuff is so common these days) Looking good tho are there any more sections to come?

the flow non flow issue-i think that 100% man made canals do not flow but so many canals are just diverted rivers or "part canals" and so normally do have a flow so there is understanding for taking it either way but they are not like raging rivers and so there would not be much of a build up of debris and so on would there?

A few more bits and pieces need to be painted and then the table will be finished so no more major canal sections to make (thank goodness). I do entertain a vague idea to create a pumphouse building that hangs over one side of the canal and pumps water from it into the city's pipes. A while ago I read an account of London during the Great Fire. Streams and canals running off the river Thames were basically used as rubbish tips. Apparently it was quite dangerous to venture in them because they were so filthy, not to mention filled with hungry feral dogs that lived off the rubbish. A lot of early industry (slaughter yards, tanners etc.) discharged their refuse straight into these streams and the Thames too. So I was probably quite restrained on the refuse...there's no corpses or pig carcasses in there...mainly because I ran out of time to model them .

that is also true - i had to do an assignment on transport in the industrial revolution(england) and canals featured heavily.the conditions were absolutely discusting it is hard to beleive what those people actually lived in!

Question for the resident water expert:
I'm assuming you cast the water in in sections. How do you seal off the edges of your modular pieces to stop the resin running off everywhere?

Masking tape along the edges. I wasn't using resin, I was using polyurethane floor varnish. Once dry it didn't adhere to the masking tape at all so I could just peel it off. Probably the same for resin I guess. The biggest problem I had was I just used masking tape without any support behind it...so of course the varnish 'bowed' it out in the middle which required some hand sanding to fix up. Stupid really...half a second's thought would have made me realise I should have put a bit of wood behind the masking tape to support it and keep the edges straight

Sounds like a plan. I'm going to build a modular acw board, and i can't resist adding a river
