Like I've said before, broaden your horizons!
Military modelling, cars, planes, boats, railways; all have things that are of use to us, maybe not immediately, but with a bit of thought and improvisation.
This hobby of ours is relatively small and even fairly new in the grand schem of model making. There are lots of materials and techniques out there we can can alter to suit.
For example, I was in the model shop in Wellington the other day, and they had a big tray of "junk" kits to get rid of; mostly planes, none in a box, and all for $3 - $5. Now, I've got no interest in making a model plane, but what you get for your $3 is a big bag of bits for your bits box. Decals can be used for anything, then there's all the guns and bombs and stuff, always useful. Wheels, struts, engine parts can be used for just about anything, even the main parts of the plane, the fuselage and wings can be used for something. Maybe some kind of rocket bike for your space marines made from the fuselage, and the wings could go on a scratch built drop ship or somethnig of that ilk.
