oki found it, the link to the site that had instructions for using the stuff (well many sites do, just this one stuck out) you can see from the pictures that it appears to be pretty dense, they're cutting slices off with a knife and it's not crumbling into loads of balls and seems to shape nicely us.games-workshop.com/games/lotr/twotowers/hobby/terrain/table/hill.htman excellent tutorial btw, it's given me plenty of ideas now. Going to see if hubby can pick me up a sheet this week

I just had a thought earlier; what are boogie boards / body boards made of?
It could be the bally stuff, but might be high density. If it is the warehouse always has cheap ones

I suppose "high density" and "float" don't really go together

That's a good store; pricey, but a good range of stock. The only place i know that carries the whole range of clay shapers for instance.

They do some kind of student discount so hang about outside and collar the nearest longhaired layabout on an art course and get him to buy it for you. "Of course I can use styrofoam, I just look younger than I am. My dad lets me use it at home. Go on no one will find out."

Where would you get a styrofoam cutter? The one that looks like a small hacksaw stuck into a tin can and instead of a blade it has a 'hot'wire.

most model shops have them, and they are fairly easy to make; here's one way to do it. But I just use one of those knives with the extendable, snap-off blade. Carefully. Just extend the blade to the required length, adnsaw through the foam rather just cut. You don't get a totally clean cut, but since you're probably going to cover the foam anyway, it's no biggee.

Hold up.
I just paid a visit to games workshop to get some paint.(dang I feel myself getting geekier visitng there).
Anyways they had some blue foam hills under construction there. It turns out Gordon Harris art supplies has it.
So I stroll over to Gordon Harris.
Sure enough they have HEAPS of it in varying sizes. Basically the tongue in groove sheets, ranging from $12 to $35. You can also by halfsheeets of the $35 at $18.
They also have lots of foam board sheets too.
I recommend a visit if you are near there.

walked into the workshops in uni today and saw a stack of what you're all after. about 80mm thick in say 1mx1.5m slabs,
used for cavity insulation the wokshop gadgie said. available from B+Q (or your NZ euivalent). not sure on price tho - might pop and see how it compares...
got some pics but no digicam lead here so will post later...(if anyone's actually interested in seeing any that is..?)
