Ok after seeing all these cool tutorials on how to create gaming tables and hills etc from styrofoam, I decided to get my hands on some and build a hill or two. After loads of searching online and ringing around it seems we simply don't have it here in NZ. So what can I use as a substitute.

Isn't it just expanded polystyrene foam by another name? or do you mean the high density pink stuff?

I'll find out. I know most of the businesses around here.
If it's just polystyrene foam sheets you need, like for making hills and stuff, you can get it from Queensgate. It's better if you go at night though...

Right! I like a challenge!
I'll be offline for a while to go and scope out some foam.

Oki, Forman in seaview sell it. Sheets are 2500 x 600 tongue and groove, not that we want or need that. though handy i guess for joining two together for a 1200 wide board
30mm thick is $28.04 +gst 40mm thick is $36.84 +gst 50mm thick is $46.75 +gst
anyone want to go halves or thirds or quarters in a sheet of 50mm?

rang them, they don't have styrofoam, but they do have a EVA closed cell foam which they sell for model making and film set stuff etc. It comes in 1m x 2m sheets
pricing on this is
5mm $30 a sheet 10mm $48 a sheet 20mm $82
I forgot to ask if that was gst inclusive or ex, I think I might stick with chasing up the styrofoam as I am wanting the thicker stuff and it is definately cheaper. Not really sure at all how the two products compare as I have never seen either of them, thoughts?

i've just been on a trek all round there, don't know how i missed that place. Mind you, a lot of the shops round there don't have any sort of signage, so you have no idea who they are or what they do.
best i could get was a company in East Tamaki called Polymer Development Group. They do a two part mix which you pour into a frame or mold and expands into foam, and then can be carved to shape.
PFP on buick st petone will do this for you, but the guy admitted it's cheaper to go and buy the stuff yourself. (that's the advantage of going round shops in your work gear; look like a tradesman, get treated like a tradesman - bit different when it's a retail store like, say, countdown ;D )

which leads me to ponder over those cans of instant expandable foam stuff used for sealing up gaps. just spray it on a plywood gaming board where yo want hills, hack it into shape and finish off with plaster? though I think generally people are wanting stepped kind of hills which are more condusive to standing minis on that in mind maybe teh 30mm is the better size to get as it will create nice stepped terraces and can be glued togetehr for a 6cm deep block.
Aaron, I can't imagine it would weigh much to post, just the size. I posted a fialry large box to napier for $12.75. It was if I recall right 75x45x45. but they didn't worry about actual size, just the weight. Cheapest large parcel rate i think is about $7.50 if you were just wanting blocks then maybe your share of a sheet could be cut to slabs to fit inside a box from pack'n'save and posted fairly cheaply? Got to weigh up any postage against the price of buying a full sheet up there though, also your time and transport costs of actually going out and getting the stuff. Maybe even with post it is still worth it
