... or improvising an artillery element when you have no suitable models. Armstrong's Belcher was a little known product of the alchemical age. Few examples of this vile weapon were built, and few of these survived more than a handful of firings. Posing as much danger to its operators as to its targets, the Belcher was designed to spew a gout of hellfire at oncoming opponents, halting any charge. The combustible mix of phlogiston, brimstone and boiling tar had to be prepared fresh prior to each firing of this damnable device of hades, loaded into the pressurised vessel at the rear, and lit by the taperman. More often than not this highly volatile combination would backfire, with the result that belchermen had the shortest average lifespan of any medieval combatant.
