Got my marching orders from the landlord last night!
Couldn't have come at a worse time. Being philisophical about it, It's a good chance to find somewhere with a decent working space, but finding somewhere that allows dogs, cats and chooks could be a bit of a problem.
Anyone want a couple of mad chooks?

my dog would see them as tasty live hunting practice, heh. I can just imagine the carnage. Landlord looking to jump on the 'cash in my investment now the housing prices are going through the roof' bandwagon?

250k... well it'd get you an ex state house in taita, or something nice in wainuiomata. Or an utterly derelict hovel in petone

Petone (were Pirate and I reside) is absolutely ridiculous, especially were I live, since I'm right on the sea.
Our pad is OK, but it's small, old, falling apart, and generally rotten from sea spray. We get sand blown through the windows and kelp all over the car every morning.
And it'll go for well over 300,000.

Ok so not moving to Wellington either... I wonder if I can afford Invercargil... any good wargames clubs down there? Probably just keep on renting till I win that power-ball.

what is funny is the three different real estate agents we've had through ours in the last few months, to give us the free appraisal that theyinsisted on doing, have all said that they'd probablt list our house around the mid to high 200's rotflmfao.. yeah right. We all know how they have hundreds of buyers lining up just dying to get into Petone at under 300k.. if we were to list ours at 270k they'd have a sale within 24 hours
Oh yes, when I questioned why they had many similar properties in the area listed at well over 300k one agent told me that the reason they had the property on cuba st (one of the main busy roads) listed at $360k was that it had three bedrooms and character WTF? erm we have three bedrooms and on inspection of this other property the character he was talking about was rimu doors and mouldings (which we have), original (read really crappy and needing to be relaced totally unworkable kitchen) and grotty bathroom and the toilet all the way out the back through the laundry.
Ok so character obviously means scrim walls, inconvienient bathroom, dangerously old wiring and no insulation coupled with an unworkable kitchen .. well that is what I figured since the other touches that contribute to character such as oiled native timber doors, varnished floors and leadlight windows (with a bay window in the front) are all things that our house actually has... and according to the agent ours doesn't have character
Ok.. so that was an important lesson to me on how real estate agents are out to get the quickest $ for themselves, how they don't actually have the vision to look past the weedy gardens (really I can't be futzed with the gardens but if I was selling we'd put a couple of grand into it and have the place looking terrific.. i'm not stupid) So the front is half painted.. but it's a work in prgress. All three agents had the exact same thing to say. Oh don't bother tidying it up and finishing off the work. We'll sell it as is.
Yep, they're not interested at all in actually getting us what the house is really worth, just a quick buck.. needless to say, we're staying put

"Character" to a real estate agent means something different to what it means to us.
You're right, it means a crap hole that'll need more money on the fix up than the buying price.
We looked at one near your way, the street that runs up to the footbidge (ava st?) a while ago, and it was nice no doubt about it, but well over 300, just silly in my book. but I bet they got the asking price.

depending on how much travel you need to be doing to town, perhaps somewhere in upperhutt/stokes valley may be good.

The main reason for living where I do was fishing, and being handy for transport into town.
But since I work at home now, transport isn't an issue, and since that work generally lasts 18+ hours a day, fishing isn't an issue either!
...but I don't reckon my wife would go for stokes valley. Considering "up the hill", normandale, maungaraki area, since that is cheaper than sea level. and good views to boot. I'll be able to see the sea but it'll be a bit far too cast!

*scooter is my whippet, if anyone is wondering
**a whippet is a skinny very fast dog that was bred for hunting rabbits, if anyone was wondering
***I don't usually talk to my dog , but I make an exception in cases like this, if anyone was wondering
****I'm going to stop adding notes to this post now, if anyone was wondering
