Here's what I've managed to get painted up so far in between novelty modelling projects; Carriers Guns Commandos

Hey looking good! Do you have a back story for them at all?
One question though: what's with the muzzle breaks on your 25pdrs? Did they come like that or did you sculpt those on? Hmm...they are 25pdrs right? Or are they 17/25's that have been foreshortended by the angle of the photo? That would explain the different muzzle break!

The 25 pdrs I got had two barrels, early and late, I went with the late.
I have got a back story in mind for the unit I'm trying to assemble, which fortunately allows for a "bitsa" type of setup. The cliched "group of veterans collected together for a special purpose mission / characterful hollywood blockbuster" type of thing.
That said, when i first embarked on this venture I decided I would go for a well balanced, well thought out practical army, rather than just models I like the look of. Yeah right, so I've now got commandos, carriers, guns, sas jeeps and pioneers. oh, and a crashed star wars vehicle with a dog sniffing at it.

Interesting, they've changed the 25pdr blisters again then presumably that's happening across the line since they're doing Late War next. Not a bad time to be starting a FoW army really!
I only had early barrels for my lot which is fine since my NZers are late 1942 North African.

Forgot to mention I used the airbrush on the guns and limbers. First time i've used it on anything so small but I will be doing it again. It speeded up the process no end, I got both guns and limbers done in a day.

I've used Tamiya Desert Yellow spray for almost all of my NZer NA army vehicles, transports etc. Unfortunately it turns out Tamiya Desert Yellow is evidently a perfect match for German tank yellow in NA!
So all my Jerry tanks will get the same paint job. Might have to weather them a fair amount to distinguish them from the NZers on the tabletop...
But yes, spray painting is superb for base coating colours.

It's tricky finding accurate colour refs for these old vehicles (and unifroms come to that). I picked up a swag of "wwii in colour" magazines at the weekend, they are quite useful. At the minute my most useful resource for colouring is my vague memories of action man outfits.
I'm going to try spray base coating the infantry too, since they are mostly one colour.

Not a bad idea. I resorted to hand painting all my figures...mainly because I couldn't get my ink washing technique to work very well in 15mm scale so achieve the same effect by basing the entire figure watered down scorched brown and then painting the layers up over that while leaving 'blacklining' (or brownlining but that just sounds wrong) in place.
Look like you're ink washing your infantry judging from those carrier passengers? What inks are you using? Cutting them with anything?

same old same old; gw inks and magic wash solution. The first batch of figs I painted got specific washes over each area; those carrier passengers just got hit with chestnut allover. Works fine on this scale.
For hardware, the basic process is looking like;
Spray black enamel primer Airbrush green basecoat 2-3 levels of brushed highlights Brush paint details (tyres, figures et cetera) Black wash Weathering
I did try airbrushing the highlights, but my skills combined with my airbrush soon had me scampering back to the non-airbrush.

Phil are you using GW paints in your airbrush ? if so what are your mixing ratios ? I am having a hard time finding a consistancy that works well.
Also what sort of airbrushing rig have you got ?
Mine is running of an air compressor through a cheap hobby airbrush (about $30 from bunnings)
Have you tried with enamel paints ?

I've got one of those brushes you're talking about - single action? I haven't been able to use it yet as it came with an adaptor for bottles but not the compressor. The brush i use is about 400% more expensive, ie the cheapest double action you can get, about $120. These brushes come out of china by the billion, have various brands on them, and are all identical. A serious airbrusher would probably have a good chortle at it, but it's fine for me, and being so cheap I don't worry about it crapping out; I can replace the whole thing for less than the cost of parts for better models. I'm still experimenting to find a good consistency, but made a fortunate error when doing the guns. I mixed neat paint with floetrol, about 3:1, and then spooned it into the brush. All other times I add a load of water before filling the brush, and this time I didn't realise my error till it was too late. Decided to just run with it anyway, and it turned out surprisingly well. I couldn't get a good fine spray because the paint was so thick, but on the plus side the reservoir didn't empty nearly as quick as would with a thinner mix. After a couple of light passes I had a decent basecoat, which while not perfect, was good enough to start brush painting over. So basically, I dunno . Whatever works best for you! I would generally go for thinner mixes, but in this case thicker worked well. I only ever use water based nowadays (apart from spray cans) so haven't tried enamel. A mate of mine does use a brush like yours with enamel though.

I painted my first batch of infantry using the airbrush; one rifle section as a tester, and I'll be doing them all this way now. Only used it to lay down the uniform colour, then brushed the rest. Saved a lot of time I reckon, although the saving was swallowed up the time taken to setup and clean the airbrush. I'll be doing it again, but this time with a lot more figures at one go.

More bloody infantry; And more WIP, Artillery crew with just the uniforms colours sprayed, Platoon leaders in black primer, jeep and trailer for the pioneers, and some DAK vehicles for a bit of variety, including some captured allied vehicles for a bit more
