quick pics of my current ACW setup; Left to right: 8th Texas Volunteer cavalry "Terry's Texas Rangers", 1st Virginia Cavalry "Black Horse, 4th Texas Volunteer infantry, Louisiana Zouaves Back row: 1st Texas, Wheat's Tigers, Dismounted cavalry horses, 1st Texas Lancers "Chevaliers de Debray" Front row: Charleston Zouave Cadets "McLellan's Zouaves", 2 units of sharpshooters, 1 lone texan without a unit, 1 gun with crew, 6th South Carolina.

They look great! But why on earth did the Zouaves (militia right?) wear those ridiculous outfits?
Wouldn't you feel like a dick striding onto the field of battle in baggy, striped trousers?

You would now, but they were the hight of martial style in them days.
bit of history; zouaves were a french phenomenon from the crimea, and wore these north african inspired outfits of baggy pants and short jackets. They were also the elite units of the day, and as it happens a lot of future acw generals were in the crimea as observers, and, impressed with the exploits of the zouaves, decided to import the idea lock-stock-and-baggy-trousers to their own armies.
The confederates had maybe half a dozen units who adopted the zouave garb, but the northerners had scores of them.
