Since the Mid-winter modelling madness i have slowely made progress on a new tyranid swarm. the one thing ive found with tyranids is they arnt very good in the building progress when you are playing games with small amounts of points. their also a B*tch to paint, way too repeditive, but ive made it through:
16 Termagaunts 16 Hormagaunts 28 Genestealers 3 Warriors 3 Ripper swarms
Ill hopefully have pics to show by friday as my mum has nicked off with the camera overseas. Soon ill be buying one of the new Hive Tyrants, which in my opinion is better than the new Carnifex, but only slightly. For the finished army i hope to have wings for the tyrant and for the 3 warriors, a Broodlord to infiltrate some stealers, another 20 stealers, 3 zoanthroapes to keep the gaunts in line and add some much needed fire support on the move. Let me know what you guys think of the list so far, would be much appreciated.

Everything is new except the genestealers, got excellent deals on trademe for them, $16.50 for 13 and $20 or so for 15 so thats more than double you can buy for new for about $20 less!! im thinking of buying a new box for the retinue of the broodlord though. I hate putting biomorphs on stealers as they are already 1 point more expensive than the average space marine!!

I totally agree with you about painting Tyranids and I can see why people go for the 'dip' method because these guys are a horde army where every figure is almost identical! *Deadly* boring to paint so good effort! You got further than I did

mint effort alright.since mid winter i have painted 5 marines and a rhino transport thinking about your army list i would take a carnifex or 2 because they can take so much punishment and they can dish it out too .this army list for 1500 point army i suppose so i suppose the amount of stealers will make up for that

I dont really like Carnifex's in combat, way too slow in my opinion, much better to take a hive tyrant, in total it should get to 1800 points

I don't mind Carnifexes myself...they're tanks...and they draw fire away from your Hive Tyrant. But yes they're slow.
I haven't seen the new codex myself. Are genestealers any less brittle than they used to be? Everytime I've tried to use them they get blasted apart by ranged fire.

They are a bit better, increased save to 5+, duno bout much else though, toughness 6 makes them much harder to kill than gaunts. good idea with drawing fire freom the tyrant, although in my last game my opponent wasted 2 turns on him which he could have spent on my more expensive genestealers

hmmmm definaelty go with extended carapace for the 'stealers - that 4+ save is heaven when facing bolters (Or any other ap5 rapid fire weapons). Fex's are slow, and really only anti-tank - their low amount of attacks means they cant kill that many guys in combat. I think that apart from that, heaps of stealers is a good choice, lots of juicy targets for my assault cannons My $0.02

i have not played against tyranids but the models i would be targeting first with ranged fire would definitly be genestealers.they just seem to make a mess of every thing they come into contact with.hive tyrants are better than the carnifexes(from what i have seen of the new codex)but like codemonkee said they are tanks.but as you already had one included in your list i did not mention them.not a bad list.

orks with choppas can eat the 5 terms pretty easy. Sure assault cannons are great but for the same price you can get 27 orks =]

I understand where youre coming from for the extended carapace BUT its 4 points per model, taking a squad of 12 from 192 points to 240 points with one upgrade, it may not seem like much but id rather get a few more stealers with that amount of points.
