Yes Pirate, let's have that mermaid in a thread of it's own, i've been dying to see apic of it.
Instead of kneadit you might consider plasticene. form you rough shape with that, then coat in PVA. It sets pretty hard, then you can do your final layer in whatever.

At the moment my largest conversion would have to be converting my Mumak (Massive LotR elephant) Although the only thing I did was convert the head to be facing up. I ran out of GS over the course of filling gaps, so I bought some from you Yakety. Don't look half bad though. P.S I'm James

They're pretty popular those elephants, eh?
I was in GW (in disguise) the day they came out, and all these parents were pulling their hair out going "What do you mean they've sold out already?!?!?".
Stressful time when little johnnie isn't going to get his elephant for christmas.

Well they were quite cheap for their size, only retailing around $130. Considering other sets came out at around $55 for 5-10 models... But hey that really doesn't have anything to do with conversions so I'll just shut up

What material are they made in? Plastic? Resin?

They were made from the same material as the rest of the LotR plastics, but whether that was actually plastic or resin I don't know, I'm not too good at tellin the difference

Ok;
Most (all?) GW figures are "plastic" or polystyrene to be exact (unless they're metal of course). That's the same stuff model aeroplanes are made of. It is fairly soft and "thermoplastic", which means it will melt under heat.
Resin is completely different; 90% of the time it is tan in colour. It is hard and quite brittle, and "thermoset", meaning it won't melt. Resin casts will display a level of detail you will never get with plastic (Although that is as much down to the molding method as the material itself).
GW do a range of resin products, bigger (even) pricier pieces. Forgeworld are they called?

O ok then, that makes sense. GW figures are all relatively high detailed, though, but I see now what you mean by plastic or resin. The Mumak therefore is plastic not resin.

When you see a resin figure you will see the difference, and it will probably make you never want to paint a plastic figure again!
Head along to your nearest model shop, they usually have resin pieces by small independant outfits that blow away anything the big manafacturers do. They'll probably just be military subjects, but will give you an idea

I would head to my nearest model store, but theres a problem: we don't have one! The nearest model store to me/Timaru/Oamaru/surrounding areas is Comics Compulsion in Chch (at least 2 hours drive). Hence the reason I wanna start something for miniatures in Timaru.

Mumak is plastic yes, all the better for converting with Seen the Squiggoths made by Forgeworld? Pretty wicked Things like the Minis Tirith Wall by Games Workshop was resin, its $170 for a wee bit of terrain, but it's the best bloody terrain I've ever seen P.S Don't Mind my language
