Having 4 of them gives you a huge ammount of mobile fire power. There survivability and worth comes down to how your enemy places them as a threat, I would be blasting them from turn one, personally.
also would another 10 man squad have more benefit, unless your Raven wing in which case tornadoes AWAY! =]

The problem I have seen with landspeeders is two-fold. Firstly they have a lot of firepower in a relatively fragile vehicle so they tend to be targeted first. Second, they are fast and can end up isolated in front of the army unless backed up with other fast troops. Failing to move them around the board is counter-productive too.
They are useful if you have other vehicles in your army as they are relatively cheap and provide a wealth of targets so split up incoming fire. They can also be really effective at chewing up infantry in the right circumstances.
On the whole I'd look at it like this. In a large battle it is probably worth throwing a few 'speeders into the mix but in a smaller battle bodies count especially for high cost units like marines.
Cheers Chris

you can always hold the speeders back to menace any enymy who tries to rush you. then charge them when your frontline is a turn away. that way the enemy has to pick between the big guns or the front line.

I always felt that sitting them back kind of defeated the purpose of Landspeeders. Still holding them in reserve as a highly mobile troubleshooting force has merit.

You know, that's exactly the sort of formation / tactics you would use with a dark ages british army, but the speeders would be cavalry

well the assault cannons have 48 inch range(i think)so i do not mind holding them back at all.yeah i suppose i should go for more marines as i only have 15 tactical marines in 1500 points and have two dreadnoughts also with assault cannons

Yeah that doesnt sound to flexable... also one well placed a couple well placed shots and a big chunk of your army is gone. I would expect at least 25 marines in a 1500 pt army

well i play against eldar and chaos so the eldar aspect warriors become a real threat and the choas well depends what he fields as he has 4000 points but normally goes ok exept when we did this 3 way game and they both picked on me and i got wasted.and i have not actuall yplayed with this army as yet.only 1000 points of it .the xtra 500 goes to the dreadnuoghts 1 landspeeder and some assault marines

Assault cannons have 24 inch range - I have 2 in my 1200 point army, one on termies and one on my dread. Landspeeders to me are really onjy objective holders - short ranged weapons and armour 10 means they normally get blown up way to easy and way to quick, whereas you can hold them back and then 24" across the feild to capture objectives in turn 6.
