My wife (a freelance writer) needs a new laptop. What do you think of this deal?

Looks alright, Compaq is a fine brand. Naturally I'd ask about warranty and service since you're buying from The Warehouse. 1.8GHz is ok for word processing. 40Gb hard drive is fine for normal use unless you're filling it with MP3's or dvix files . It's nice that you're getting a printer (useful) and an external hard drive (mmm less that useful, quite spacy at 160GB but I bet it'll be a pretty slow drive) for the price too. The only comment I'd have is that 256Mb RAM seems a bit stingy. I'd see if you can bump that to 512Mb as that will certainly improve the performance of Windows XP. My 2c.

good point, hadn't thought of the slow speed of the drive, but it will still be useful since the box itself has only 40gb. Hadn't noticed the ram either, 256 does seem a bit stingy nowadays.

256MB Ram is 'minimum spec' for Windows XP I think...
Running Windows in the minimal amount of RAM will work but doubling that will definitely make things load a bit quicker.
RAM's pretty cheap these days so it shouldn't cost that much to upgrade...less than $100 I would hope...

I can't imagine warehouse stationary offering any upgrade services, and my wife won't want me taking a screwdriver to her new shiny thing.
