Well, I suppose I should have a go myself, so I'll be trying to get off my bum and do something with the mountains of 20mm figures I've got.
Because I've got such a short attention span, I've got no chance of sticking at any one thing, so my aim is to try and complete (although obsessions like these are never completed) one of the following:
Dark Ages Britons
(If you've seen the king arthur film, ignore everything about that)
Arthur's 6th century Britain. An interesting time; the Roman's have left Britain to try and cling on to the remnants of their empire, and Britain is left to fend for itself.
It's interesting from a modelling aswell as a historical point of view. The Britons left behind fall into two basic camps, the Romanised, who wish to remain in the empire, and the Nationalists, who wish to revert to a celtic british way of life. These factions war amongst themselves, and also against the Picts of the north and the Scots from Ireland (yes). To aid in these fights some British warlords have enlisted the help of Saxon mercenaries, some of whom have decided they'd rather have the islands to themselves.
So you've got Britons who look like late Romans, some that look like Celtic Britons, picts, scots, saxons, the other races of Britain, such as the Votadini (of which Arthur was one) and then all manner of insurgents, mercenaries, slaves and ex-pats from the continent. Dead easy to model, any old ancients figures can usually be converted to suit. and after all, it is the dark ages, which were so called since no records were kept, so noone really knows what went on.
This is the one I'm most likely to make progress with, I have several hundred figures waiting to paint.
current status:
1 ten man unit of heavy infantry
1 six man unit of medium infantry
Yes, I've got a way to go, but I've got 14 almost finished units that will be my first months targets, and another ten or so for after that.
American Civil War
Focussing primarily on the confederates, I'll be knocking together my acw set.
The uniform of the confederates was anything but, so I'll be buying confederate infantry and cavalry (italeri mostly) and sprinkling a few others through the units to breaK up the appearance; some northerners, some cowboys, I've got a "Custer's last stand" set that I'll be able to work in. Basically anything that looks kinda right works for 20mm southern states. Think texas rangers and louisiana bushwackers.
That's for the infantry and cavalry anyhoo, for the artillery things are a bit different. I'm making them. Guns and crew, so if I do actually get them ready, they will also be available for sale.
current status:
Two cavalry men almost painted
(but I've got loads of boxes ready to paint )
Cannon master underway.
Steampunk
Space 1889. Alternate history late 19th century, with Confederate and United States, and a steam powered information revolution.
Current status:
1 scratchbuilt confederate Steam gatling carriage with crew.
I'll be using my confederates from acw, plus british lancers and colonial empire troops (zulu and indian wars vintage) and throwing in a few from other periods for a bit of variety, probably converted napoleonics and wwI. I'll also be knocking out some steam powerred tanks, cannon and land ships.
Urban / cyberpunk
This a bit of a catch-all category. I'm working on a set of gulf war goodies and baddies, plus a near future urban force, and there is plenty of crossover, so I lump them all together.
The basis for these are any modern infantry, particularly modern us and allied special forces for the goodies, anything with kalashnikovs for the baddies, plus any other odd characters which would suit a cyberpunk game (i've got pilots, security gaurds with dogs, a saluting hitler, anything really. I'll try and work a few ninja in too hopefully. Caesar minis have just released a set of wwII partisans which could be useful.
Current status:
1 James bondy type figure in a tux
1 urban cammoed swat guy with mp5 (converted caesar minis SAS)
again, i've got a heap of figures to paint for this!
So there you go. I don't anticipate actually getting much done, and will probably be the first contestant booted out, but I'll give it a go! Also, most of these are diffrent to the other "army" entries in that I will be collecting both sides of the battles in most cases.
