As has already been mentioned, the discount is mostly to retain staff as it would be difficult for someone on a shop assistants salary toi pump out cool armies all the time and I'm pretty bloody sure the Vagabond staff would have discounts as well.
I have el grande axe to grind with Vagabond and it's owner. The staff there (except for Regan) are absolutely useless and I have seen them mislead customers on more than one occassion for their own gain, the owner has a wee grudge against GW and tries to work against it despite the help he gets from them and the money he makes from their products.
A lot of people seem to hate having small children in a store, truth be told, outside of Saturdays and holidays the majority of GW's custom at the Queen Street store is university students whereas Vagabond seem to have a constant stream of ankle biting card players.
Vagabond are a jack of all trades, master of none type store. They don't have the most comprehensive range in the city for Rackham, WHFB/40K/LotR or Flames of War and frankly I'd rather go to wargames supply if I wanted to buy Rackham models, or Battlefront if I wanted Flames of War stuff.
As for Vagabond keeping the 'wargamer/roleplayer' store alive, that's utter shit. If any of you know the owner Dave, he's out there purely for personal gain. Any instore advances made, a painting or gaming table are done with the help of GW trade at little cost to Dave.
Now let's hop out of this fashionable 21st cynicisym and examine why GW staff are helpful to Aaron, it's more commonly known as customer service, not being excited to see an adult. Enthusiastic kids are more enjoyable to have around by the bucket load than unenthusiastic adults, it's people with that sort of mindset that get jobs at GW. The staff at Vagabond, except for Regan, have absolutely awful customer service skills which may have something to do with Dave employing the bare minimum of staff at the city store for his own gain.
As for GW's 'wallet humping', if they're making ridiculous amounts of money, why is it that in the six months to November 2004 (most recent results), GW's total profit, after tax, after all costs and retained profit was 1.528 million pounds a measly 2.15% of their total turnover. This was up from last year, but it's still clear that GW actually do something with their immediate profits, as opposed to scrounging as much for the sharegolders as they can.
