Just got some Riders of Rohan 'in mint condition'!! They had been undercoated with black high gloss paint. It certainly didn't look like any form of craft/model paint. I tried turps. Soaked the figure while I walked the dog. On my return the black base had melted but the figure was OK, a few chips of paint came off but not much else. Under normal circumstances i would overpaint but this paint has been applied so thick that all the fine detail has disappeared.
Having read this forum I'll go see if I have any brake fluid!

I've just read about an English product "Fairy power spray" which is a kitchen degreaser, supposed to be very good for stripping.
Don't know if it's available over here, or what it's called if it is.

Actually, Fairy is the biggest brand of washing up stuff in england. unilever or P&G or someone (they're probably the same company anyway by now)

well when our new mitre 10 mega store opened the other week I got free samples of simple green cleaner. This week I've been sent some chaos warriors to paint for a comission and they're terribly covered in paint, very gloppy so needed a strip. I usually throw them into acetone but these have some plastic parts so I tried teh full strength simple green
WOW
no horrid fumes. no major hand inrritation and it removes paint quite well. also it doesn't evaporate off so you're not left with tacky paint and having to reapply acetone. Though I'm going to buy an extra hard and hard tooth brush tomorrow to help with scrubbing the paint off

I use oven cleaner on both plastic and metal mini's works fine just leave it for 5-10 mins and a gentle scrub paint comes off easy as.
I think what hasn't been mentioned here is what 'type' of paint are you stripping, spray or pottle?. The undercoat is the key> if its spray then its got polymir in it which makes it very hard to strip usualy requiring several coats of stripper but if you always undercoat by hand with standard acriylic paint, srtipping is a hell of a lot easier

Methylated Spirits. The purple stuff. That's all I've ever used for all my figures. Mind you I only *ever* paint with acrylics. Meths won't work for enamels. Works a treat for acrylics though and nowhere near as nasty as brake fluid.
