Giday all, Many of you might know, I am a bit of a miser. The one up side of this is I am always looking to save a buck. The good thing about saving a buck is you realy got to get creative about how you do it, it means inventing new techniques, looking at your bits box from a different angle and most of all, turning up a the DIY or supermarket counter with a shopping list that makes people look at you funny.
Kit bashing or conversions is the name of this game, and its easy. Take one regular out of the box model and make it something else. There are only a couple simple rules.
1. Basic model must change either troop type or army. eg. Ork Boy -> Storm Boy, Skaven Clanrat -> Storm Vermin, Inqusitor Lord -> Chaos Aspiring Champion.
2. You should Try and make something cheap into something expensive. Though not a hard and fast rule, I want to see people save money.
3. Painting is not required
4. Work in progress shots are required. And you can use figures your currently working on, so long as you can show us at least 2 steps of work.
5. ANYTHING else goes.
If you only use putty, sweet, if you butcher 3 figures to make one, sweet, If you have fun, thats the only thing thats important.
This will run untill the end of the month, at that time post your WIP shot or completed shot. A half finished job is as good as a finished one, The prize we will all get is ideas and tips for conversions
And Now for a post that shows you what you should be looking to Acheive.

Just so you know this isnt an entry, just an example. Beastman GorsModels Used40k Ork Sprue (Arms and Torsos) GW Animal Mount (Boar and Wolf, Hind Quarters and heads) Heros Quest Ogre (Arms) BitsVarious bits from my box (axes, swords and pouches) Toothpicks (Spikes and Halberd pole) $2 shop hankercheif (Loin Cloth) Plastic Steak Plate (Checkered Tiles on Base) Cotton String (in a box, used as Hair) NotesString was unwound and glued to head using superglue, put in rows working from the back of the head forwards. To style and complete the hair mix PVA with water and soak the string. now practise your barber skils. Spikes made by drilling holes for the pointy bits of toothpicks Loin Cloths hide the unsightly hole left from sawing your Animal in half. I cut rectangles twice as long as I needed and folded it over a long piece of string, tied it around the waist then used superglue on the knot. shape the loin cloth in a similar way to the hair. Superglue works better and you only need to put it along the folds Neither of these models have any putty on them

This one is my entry as its the bigest sculpting/conversion project I will be doing this month. Its also part of the Mid Winter Modeling Madness challenge. Storm BoyzModels Used40k Ork Sprue Other BitsKneadit Aqua NotesSo far my sculpting tools have been Fingers, broken off craft knife bladesand a toothpick. The model with red on it is an original GW model, the red is highlighting the parts that make a storm boy a storm boy. the little cone thing next to the rocket has a small capacitor inside it as filler.

Lovely to see that 'string as hair' tip you gave us as photos. Man that works well! I'm definitely keen to try it on a smaller scale for some flowing hair on a wooden figurehead I still need to try sculpting for ye olde balsa Mordheim ship.
Reckon it would work just as well with a finer thread? Surely it would!

you might need to try painting realy thined down PVA on, otherwise it might obscure the detail of the thread, ya kinda need to get it so the top layer is put into place least you und up with a stringy blob (which happens even at this scale)
More updates on the storm boyz tonight... nearly got them finished

Heh... my current project involves turning a helicopter, a tank, the turret off an immolater and a slave girl into a penitent engine... does that count?

Sounds great and to be honest I am gunna have to look up what exactly a penitent engine is =] Your component list certainly meets the criteria... and its also an excelent example of traditonal kit bashing hmmm, maybe i should have been more specific and just said turn stuff into other stuff Oh wow, its like Jesus Christ An Eldar War Walker and an Imp. Guard Sentinal all crashed into each other. This is gunna be sweet ;D

Well after a busy weekend I would like to report that I have finished the bodies for my storm boyz, and I think they look pretty convincing. Storm Boyz Models Used 40k Ork Sprue Other Bits Kneadit Aqua Solder Wire (from PC power suply) Sprue (Yes thats right!) Paper clip Notes So far my sculpting tools have been Fingers, broken off craft knife blades and a toothpick. Now also the butt of my needle file. the little cone thing next to the rocket has a small capacitor inside it as filler. a few bits have been made by presing out putty into a flat sheet of the right thickness, these include the rocket wings, shoulder mounts, and some of the detail on the control barrel. I also rolled 4 snakes of putty, one for the control barrels, one tiny and one slightly larger for the 'belly' button and the spigot bit to the right, the fourth was rolled with a paperclip in the middle. the 4th was cut free of the paperclip so I could slice little doughnuts used as couplings in all the pipes. The corugated pipe is solder wound around a piece of wire (I would have prefered guitar string). the wires on the other side are, well, wires. I cut a handle for my spigot and also carved tiny buttons for the control from sprue, the spigots nut was a thin dot of solder (sliced off). I have decided (at the moment) not to add any more rivets ... though I might. All thats left is the rockets... and maybe I will put chin straps on all the helmets... Next time I update they will be some what painted =] Hope you like it =]

Well I've converted the chaplain himself, didn't quite stick to the parts list I said I would but hey who cares. his teleport homer was fun to make, it was a few bitz off the vehichle upgrades srue stuck to a DIY flying stand and then glued to a separate 25mm base. The chaplain looks quite massive when he's next to the other assault marines, which is what I had intended.
Pics coming tomorrow, I promise!
