What would be really awesome, would be a thread section on conversions that people have done. PitYak you could offer some cool tips and basic advice.

That's a great idea. I've moved this post to "Show us your little men" Anyone's got any cool conversions, post away! Anyone's got any questions on conversions I may be able to answer, post away too! I'll think a bit more about this tomorrow, it's getting late now

Go the conversions! Currently I am working on converting a whole 1500 point Space Marine army (once I actually buy the rest of, I have only about 300 points worth at the moment). For any of you who don't know 40k, thats about 53 1" high models. So far I've converted a standard bearer, missile launcher, flamer and a few standrad marines. Unfortunately there's no pics available I've also had a go at converting a few guys from the Lord of the Rings range but they're just not as good as the 40k.

That's interesting; I've heard people talk about their x000 points armies, and wondered what that worked out as per figure.
I've also converted some LOTR figures, Rohan riders into Arthurian heavy cavalry. For anyone wanting to do the same, these are a good starting point. The armour and clothing are quite good approximations already, the main thing I had to do was get rid of the bows and quivers, resculpt the cloaks and replace the weapons. With my own steel items of course!
The saddles aren't quite right, but are good enough, and at least the figures don't have stirrups.

points vary per army, for the space marines its generally 15 points per basic model and then pay upgrades from there.. I find the LotR models awkward to convert seeing as they're smaller still than 40k models, which I'm focussing on at the moment. My fave conversion'd have to be either the flamer or standard bearer, the flamer having Green Stuff flames added and then painted and glossed, and the marine being highlighted appropriately, or the standard bearer, where his feet were cut and repositioned onto stairs built onto his base, his bolter arm swivelled around and his other hand now bears a toothpick with a cross-bar form the veteran backpack, with standard attached to that.

are you fitting the rohan riders into an existing army? I wonder how people go with compatibility between ranges.. I mean they're all supposedly 28mm but loads are 30 or even 32 and even when they are all the same height there's differences in scale of heads and hands. The lotr guys are all quite fine compared to most of the other minis I've seen

No they were one offs (still are technically since i've finished neither of them).
The LOTR figures are the most realisitc I've seen from GW for a while, and I'm guessing here but I assume as part of the licensing deal they had to move away from cartoony figures? Maybe? I dunno.
As for being shorter than the others, well my conspiracy theory is it's so you can't use LOTR with warhammer, and have to buy more figures. Surely not!

(acting cool, check noones looking) sounds like another GW scheme to swindle money out of our pockets. *coughwholenewrulebookforafewchangescough*

Surely not. I mean, they discontinue products and relaunch them with minor changes. What's wrong with that?

From what Ive heard about the LOTR figures they had to be checked with the film company before they could be produced, that might have resulted in more realistic models but perhaps it was just a result of having so much great material to sculpt from they managed to figure out the proper proportions of a human?
As soon as they started producing things that didn't appear in the movie (Swan knights of Dol-Amroth) suddenly youve got Knights of Minas Tirith with a swan slapped on his helment...
Coincidence?
having said this I like the herioc nature of GW fantasy models. I found the LOTR quite hard to adjust too, fortunately so far no breakages but Ive come close on a couple of bowmen.

i must admit, i like them too. They weren't called 28mm when I started out, just 25mm. Except Citadels were huge compared to everyone else. Then they became "heroic" 25mm, and finally 28mm.
I like the exaggerated features, and sculpt some of my own that way, but also like realistic figures, which is why I like the LOTR figures for converting.

I dont actually have any pics of my flamer conversion, as I dont have a digital camera.. The idea for fire came from a warhammer fantasy article on the US GW site, and I thought about adding flames to a flamethrower and it all evolved from there... The site did show a pic of a heavy flamer with a few pathetic flames comin out the end but nothin like the fireball my flamer's now shooting
