Does anyone play this?
I've had a free copy from a cover disc lying round for years and I eventually decide to try it. It rocks!
Hex based, turn based WWII armour strategy game with off screen artillery and air support, infantry, afvs, apcs, and every imaginable military vehicle. It rocks. I think I mentioned that.
Give it a go if you can find it.

Google 'Steel Panthers World At War' because it's a totally free game these days. Totally free for download. And not too shoddy either as you mention.

I thought it might be, as this is a full version not a demo or anything.
Have you played it? I've been hooked since I foolishly stuck it on my laptop on Friday. At least on the desktop I had to make an effort to go and play, now it's get up, coffee and smoke outside, spwaw on my knee!
I'm still trying to suss out all the finer points like command and control, how orders work, artillery and such, but even still it's great just charging tanks around blasting stuff. Doesn't really play like a tuenbased hex game either, the graphics are quite nice and disguise the hexing, and the opportunity fire rule makes it a bit less of a UGO-IGO thing.
Top game, just hope I get bored of it soon so I can get back onto other stuff.

I tried it a few times but am embarrassed to say even the AI hammered me . Probably because my Germans were always quite gung-ho, racing their Panzers across open fields etc. The opportunity fire is great fun and the morale work nicely too. Nothing worse than strolling down a nice empty road to discover a bunch of enemy infantry hiding in houses at the end armed with MGs! I think you can play it turn based via email can't you? Maybe I should re-download it and we could jack up a game!

you sure can, sounds like a plan!
I'm no expert myself either, I've only been playing the tutorial and one other scenario, the one from "a bridge too far". I can win on the tutorial, but I'm trying to finesse my way round now , rather than just suicidaly throwing tank after tank after infantry team at the approching jerries.
I was having a quick squizz through the manual this morning (manual?) and am picking up a few tips, like it says to always move you plattoon command last, that sort of thing. Manuals are pretty useful it turns out.

Alright, give me a couple of days to slurp it down over the interon and set it up and try and figure out how to drive it again and maybe we could start an email based game next week? Anybody else in . Does it do multiple players in the same scenario or not?

I'll look into it - a multiplayer game would be great. Failing that, we'll just have to start a forum league!

since its free now, do you suppose it's kosher to copy my original if anyone wants one? Not that i would condone piratical practices or anything, but if anyone doesn't want to try pulling it down the phoneline it could be an option.

What version do you have? Check out www.fprado.com/armorsite/sp_waw.htmas the full 8.20 version is available from here as well as the 8.30 and 8.40 patches. Being a PC gamer I naturally patched mine to 8.40!

I've had this version since about '99 I think; tried it when I first got it, then stuck it on the "one day i'll play this again pile" until last week. Now i reckon i'm addicted
